Former Team India cricketer Dinesh Karthik slammed the batter Shreyas Iyer’s lapse from the 2025 Asia Cup squad. Karthik said that the team needs continuity, but questioned why Iyer was not included in the five standby players being considered for the Asia Cup before the T20 World Cup 2026.

The BCCI revealed on Tuesday, August 19 with five reserve players with a 15 -member squad of India for the Asia Cup. Shreyas Iyer’s lapse has provoked the debate in view of her recent performances. Despite being the host of India, the tournament is set to be in the United Arab Emirates from 9 to 28 September.

Sharing his views on Instagram on 21 August, Dinesh Karthik said Shreyas Iyer should have been included in five standby players, especially keeping in mind the 2026 T20 World Cup. He called the lapse “inappropriate”, saying that Iyer performed well under pressure.

“Where is Shreyas Iyer? It’s a big question, isn’t it? How can he remember? At one point, it makes sense. He was not a part of 15, seeing how well the team has done.”

“17 of the last 20 are so well, continuity, fair. But not making it a part of the other five players, which you have kept in mind the T20 World Cup for the near future?” Karthik said.

He said, “Closing the doors on him? It’s a bit unfair and I hope it does not happen because he has done excellently as a leader, but is also better as a batsman under pressure,” he said.

India to start 2025 Asia Cup campaign in Dubai on 10 September

India is placed in Group A for the 2025 Asia Cup with Pakistan, Oman and United Arab Emirates. Men in Blue will launch their campaign against UAE at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on 10 September.

India will face Pakistan at the same place on 14 September before concluding the group’s phase at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on 19 September. The tournament will also serve as the preparation of the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Suryakumar Yadav will captain the Indian T20I side, in which Shubman Gill as the vice-captainment. Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma and Rinku Singh have maintained their spots in the squad.

Shreyas Iyer is waiting to return to India’s T20I squad

Shreyas Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for the 2024 title, directed the Punjab Kings (PBK) in 2025. He scored 604 runs in 17 matches at the strike rate of 175.07, including six fifties, emerging as the major run-scorer of Punjab.

Apart from the IPL, the middle-order batsman also led Mumbai to Mumbai 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Mahima. He has scored 6,578 runs in 240 T20 matches, including three centuries and 43 half -centuries.

The 30 -year -old has not played T20I since December 2023, although he remains a regular in India’s ODI Middle Order and is expected to facilitate the upcoming ODI series in Australia. Iyer has scored 1,104 runs in 51 T20I matches at a strike rate of 136.12.
