Former Indian selector Kris Srikkanth is now known for taking controversial digs at Indian cricketers who have failed to deliver promising performances after being selected in the team. After Harshit Rana, this time he has taken a derogatory dig at young Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy.
India lost the South Africa tour, and many cricket fans are blaming someone or the other for the defeat. For India’s former World Cup winner, one reason for this is the unwanted burden of Nitish Kumar Reddy, who has no proper role in the Indian team.
Kris Srikkanth takes another dig at Indian team selection
Nitish Kumar Reddy faced a lot of criticism after his poor and inconsistent performance in the longest format of the game for India. During the second innings, he was out for a duck while attempting a reverse sweep off Simon Harmer.
Former Team India batsman Kris Srikkanth has questioned his selection and claimed that the all-rounder lacks clarity about his role within the team.
“Nitish Kumar Reddy, I don’t know whether he is a batsman, a bowler or a fielder,” he said on his YouTube channel “Cheeky Cheeka”.
India were batting against a huge target of 549 runs, as they already knew that they could do nothing except try to draw the game, and for this they needed to bat for 7-8 hours on the last day of the game. He told that Indian batsmen were dismissed in the dressing room due to the fear of being out.
Srikkanth said, “India knew they were out of the game in the dressing room itself because they had to play for 7-8 hours. Look how everyone got out. They were very cautious. They were not on the field, they were out in the dressing room even before they came to bat.”
Kris Srikkanth raised questions on Nitish Kumar Reddy’s role in the Indian team.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, selected as an all-rounder, neither bowls more than 10 overs in a game nor bats anywhere before the no. 8. This has raised a big question as to what is his actual role within the team.
Srikkanth further claimed that the all-rounder has not had any notable performances since his century against Australia in Melbourne. He failed to impress in the England series as well as the recent series against South Africa, while he refused to be considered for the West Indies tour.
“Nitish Kumar Reddy’s performance after Australia has completely deteriorated. I don’t take his innings against West Indies seriously. You can’t consider him a batsman or a bowler because he hardly bowls. If you say he is a pure batsman, he is coming in at number eight. There is confusion, and that poor boy is also stressed and fighting for his place. I am not blaming him, but blaming the system,” he said. Said via the above source.
Chris Srikkanth seeks stability within the Indian lineup; Demand for Virat Kohli’s return
The former selector has highlighted some genuine concerns within the Indian deck. Captain Shubman Gill did not take part in the second Test due to injury, while Rishabh Pant took over the captaincy. He believes that India lacks players who are not fighting for their position.
He has also said that if the need arises, India should consider bringing back Virat Kohli from retirement to bring stability to the Indian batting lineup.
“We have seen Pant’s batting form while captaining. He faced a lot of problems in the IPL for the last two years. We missed Shubman Gill. But I would go one step further and say bring back Kohli.”
He said, “You can think what I am saying is that we did well in England. Yes, I am not saying that. But the thing is that apart from Jaiswal, KL Rahul and Pant, there are no stable batsmen. Everyone is playing for their place. The right word for the problem is insecurity.”
