He said only time will decide whether the young players will become regulars in Test cricket, but if they have the ability and temperament, they should definitely adapt to the red-ball format.
“Vaibhav is a player who is performing very well in T20 cricket and will definitely get a chance in the Indian team. Whether he plays Test cricket or not, only time will tell. If he has the ability, the opportunity, the time and he can play his game, then he should definitely play Test cricket, because your nature, your ability and the respect you talk about comes from Test cricket. So definitely every young player should have Test cricket in his mind.” Pujara said as quoted by ANI.
The former India batsman also pointed out that modern cricket allows players to specialize in different formats. He cited examples of players who have excelled in white-ball cricket and said there is nothing wrong in having format-specific cricketers. However, he said that Test cricket remains the ultimate challenge for any batsman.
“I agree that Test cricket is the final format of the game, but that doesn’t mean that white-ball specialist players don’t have that ability. If there is a white-ball specialist like Vaibhav (Suryavanshi) and Shreyas Iyer, they should play that format. There should be different players for different formats.” Added Pujara.
