Cheteshwar Pujara admits Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century has put ‘a bit of pressure’ on Rohit Sharma

Yashasvi Jaiswal once again proved that he is not just a one-format cricketer for India. He scored a brilliant century in the third and final ODI against Afghanistan as the India national cricket team won the match by 9 wickets to clinch the series 3-0 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday. The southpaw remained unbeaten in the run chase.

Yashasvi Jaiswal was not initially a part of the ODI squad and was included in the squad after Virat Kohli was ruled out of the series due to a hamstring injury. The 24-year-old batsman took part in the second ODI when Nitish Kumar Reddy was ruled out due to injury. In the third ODI, Jaiswal took advantage of the opportunity and put the selectors under pressure by scoring 110 runs.

After his amazing inning of 110* with the help of 14 fours and three sixes, Yashasvi Jaiswal raised the question in the minds of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selectors about giving him a place in the England series as well. Now the question arises whether he will be on the flight to UK or not.

After watching his innings, former Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara made a bold comment. Speaking on JioHotstar, the former batsman believes that Yashasvi Jaiswal scoring a century will put pressure on Rohit Sharma, who played a valuable inning of 79 runs off 69 balls last night. Jaiswal and Rohit made a partnership of 170 runs for the first wicket and laid the foundation of the run chase.

There is no comparison between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi – Cheteshwar Pujara

He said, “He was expected to score runs because the team management had supported him by keeping him in the playing eleven in this match. He proved why the team management had faith in him. He improved on the shots on which he was dismissed in the last match. His style looks different after being set.”

He said, “There is no comparison between Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi because Rohit also scored runs today (Saturday). However, any senior player feels the pressure and he is putting a little pressure on Rohit Sharma. It is a healthy competition for the Indian team. Rohit and Virat (Kohli) are great players and they are not compared with any of the young players, but this team is grooming replacements for the future.”

Only big runs come from his bat- Piyush Chawla

Apart from Pujara, even former World Cup winner Piyush Chawla said that the southpaw has learned from the previous mistake he made in the second ODI. He said, “He needed to play such an innings because Shubman Gill himself had gone to number 3 to give Yashasvi Jaiswal a chance to open.

He said, “In the last match, he was out while trying to cut. Today whenever he played the cut, he turned his wrist and kept the ball down. This shows his mentality that he has to score big runs.”

“We have seen it many times before that once he gets set, big runs come out of his bat and he once again exemplified that. He knows how to score a century. He put a price tag on his wicket. He knew how important this innings was,” Chawla said.
