Punjab Kings (PBKS) are in danger of missing out on the playoffs after a dramatic collapse in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign. The Shreyas Iyer-led side made a positive start to the current season and remained unbeaten in their first seven matches, but have suffered five consecutive defeats.
PBKS face Mumbai Indians (MI) in their 12th match of the IPL 2026 season at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Thursday, May 14. Mumbai chased the target of 201 runs with one ball remaining. Despite scoring 200/8 in the first innings, the Kings lost by six wickets.
key points
- Punjab Kings suffered their fifth consecutive defeat after losing to Mumbai Indians in Dharamshala.
- PBKS has now slipped into a dangerous position in the race for the IPL 2026 playoffs.
- Even if Shreyas Iyer’s team wins its remaining two matches, it can qualify directly.
- Another defeat may force Punjab Kings to depend on the results of other teams.
The Shreyas Iyer-led side lost its winning momentum at the crucial stage of the tournament. Punjab Kings’ top-order batsmen gave the team a strong platform in the first innings, but the middle order failed in the beginning and missed the chance to score big.
At the top of the order, Prabhsimran Singh scored 57 runs in 32 balls. Azmatullah Umarzai, playing his first match of the season, scored 38 runs in 17 balls. Shardul Thakur took four wickets and helped restrict Punjab Kings to 200 in Dharamshala.
Punjab bowlers kept Mumbai Indians under pressure for most of the time while chasing the target. MI needed 51 runs in the last three overs, but Tilak Verma played an unbeaten 75 runs in the last over to guide his team to victory.
Punjab Kings’ chances of staying in the top four are now in danger
Recent poor results have made the race for the playoffs very difficult for Punjab Kings. The team were in a strong position after a great start to the season, but are in danger of missing out on qualification with all four playoff spots still open.
Punjab Kings are currently placed fourth in the points table with 13 points from 12 matches. The team recorded six wins and one draw in the first half of the tournament before losing their last five matches under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer.
Punjab Kings will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamshala on Sunday. Their final league match will be against Lucknow Super Giants on May 23 at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. PBKS has defeated LSG once this season.
The qualification of Punjab Kings will no longer be in their hands.
The qualification scenarios suggest that Punjab Kings are still in control of their playoff hopes in the final two league matches. A top-four finish is possible, but another defeat could make the team dependent on the results of other matches.
If Punjab Kings win both the remaining matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants, they will finish the league stage with 17 points and qualify directly for the playoffs. If they win one match and lose one, they can have 15 points Need to rely on other results.
If Punjab Kings lose both the remaining matches, they will finish with 13 points and miss out on playoff qualification. So far in the ten-team IPL format, no team has reached the top four with 13 or less points.
