Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have lost against Mumbai Indians by 6 wickets in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. It was a virtual do-or-die battle for both the sides as they were at the bottom of the points table. Mumbai Indians, without their regular captain Hardik Pandya, hosted LSG at the Wankhede Stadium, with Suryakumar Yadav leading the side.
LSG have now lost six consecutive games, a new low for the franchise, and they remain at the bottom of the table with four points after winning only two games and losing seven games. Rishabh Pant and the team will have to work on things quickly with five matches remaining.
LSG qualifying scenario explained
After this defeat, qualification looks grim for LSG, although not mathematically zero. After this defeat, their losing streak continued and their already poor net run rate (NRR) worsened, requiring them to win all their remaining matches while relying heavily on other results. Talking about this match, both the teams had equal points, but MI had one more game in hand.
Now, after this defeat, their NRR has rebounded, although they are sitting with four points, but the Super Giants will have to win all the remaining matches and keep their run rate on the positive side, because even with 14 points and a negative run rate, they will not be able to qualify for the playoffs.
They have a chance to reach 14 points by playing one game less than Mumbai Indians. From now on all the remaining matches are considered as virtual knockouts, and they will have to overcome a poor 2-3 home record at the Ekana Stadium to stay in contention to face RCB in their next home game.
Nicholas Pooran’s half-century innings went in vain
Talking about the match, the Super Giants were invited to bat first, and they started well with their new opening combination in the form of Josh Inglis and Mitchell Marsh. However, despite a good start at 13 runs, the former players could not cause much trouble.
Then a sensational 93-run partnership between Marsh and Nicholas Pooran put LSG in a strong position. The former scored 45 and Pooran came back in form at the right time, scoring 63 off 21 balls and helping LSG keep an eye on a big score. But there was a flurry of wickets in the middle and 5 wickets fell in the span of 43 runs.
Rohit Sharma’s show at Wankhede Stadium
Aiden Markram and Himmat Singh ensured that the Super Giants crossed the 200-run mark as they scored 31* and 40* respectively as the visitors finished with a score of 288/5. Rohit Sharma returned to the team and along with Ryan Rickelton, he laid the foundation of chasing the target of 229 runs.
Both of them made a partnership of 143 runs for the first wicket and scored 83 and 84 runs respectively. This was followed by small contributions from Naman Dheer and Will Jack, which made the run chase easier as they remained unbeaten on 23 and 10 respectively, finishing the game with 8 balls to spare.
