Brendon McCullum has decided not to waste his precious time after being removed from the post of Test head coach of the England national cricket team by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).
The former New Zealand captain has decided to stay in England during The Hundred 2026 rather than take a break after losing the big job. However, he remained the white-ball head coach of England and even led the team to stunning results in eliminating India in both the T20I and ODI series on home soil. Meanwhile, Marcus Stoinis backed Justin Langer for the role of England head coach.
Brendon McCullum has taken the first big step after being out of England Test coaching.
Well, Brendon McCullum will now only handle England’s ODI and T20I teams until his contract expires after the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup in South Africa.
With his Test coaching role now over, the former New Zealander wants to use The Hundred to take a closer look at England’s current players and also spot new talent for the future, especially for next year’s World Cup.
McCullum lost his job as Test coach just eight days after England suffered a 2-1 Test series defeat against New Zealand. This defeat has made England’s recent Test record even worse. The team has now lost seven of its last nine Test matches and has not won a Test series since 2024. After these poor results, the ECB decided to make changes to the coaching setup.
However, McCullum’s white ball record has been completely different. England recently dominated India by winning the five-match T20 series 4-0. This win helped England become the number 1 ranked team in T20I cricket. Then England won the final match at Lord’s by 27 runs and defeated India 2-1 in the ODI series. This was England’s first ODI series win over India since 2018.
The Hundred 2026 becomes Brendon McCullum’s talent-hunt mission
Earlier this year, McCullum took a break after a very busy schedule. He traveled with the England team to New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka and India and subsequently missed the opening round of the County Championship to get some rest.
But this time the situation is different. Brendon McCullum will spend the next few weeks in England looking forward to The Hundred 2026. He believes that this tournament is the best place to see England’s top white-ball players and to spot young cricketers who can play for the national team in the future. The Hundred will also help him prepare for England’s upcoming white-ball assignments.
“I’ll be around for the Hundred. I think it will be great to see some of England’s major white-ball tournaments. If you’re a white-ball coach, I think it’s great to be around, to see not only the guys in this team but also some of the next talent performing under the bright lights of the Hundred,” ESPNcricinfo quoted Brendon McCullum as saying.
“I think it’ll be cool to see it up close over the next four weeks. I’ll try and watch some of those games, and hopefully we’ll see some more talent.”
His next assignment with England will be the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, starting with the first T20I on September 15, and McCullum wants to make the most of the tournament to finalize his squad and strategy while watching the players in action.
Interestingly, reports have revealed that Sky Sports and BBC are interested in bringing McCullum to their commentary team during The Hundred 2026. If that happens, fans can see him sharing his cricket knowledge on television while continuing his work as a coach.
