Former England captain Michael Vaughan has demanded some changes so that the England cricket team can win big tournaments in the future. During a discussion with Cricbuzz, the former batsman suggested that the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) should consider altering the set-up.
Michael Vaughan’s comments came after the second semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026. England were eliminated from the tournament after losing to India by 7 runs. Under Brendon McCullum’s coaching, the Three Lions failed to claim any major trophies in recent times, including the T20 World Cup and The Ashes 2025-26.
English cricket needs to be honest: Michael Vaughan.
The 51-year-old admitted that the England cricket team has played some exciting cricket but they have failed to build the momentum to win the trophy. Be it a multinational tournament or a bilateral series, the result remains the same.
Michael Vaughan criticized the team in harsh words, “English cricket needs to be honest and open to dialogue to admit that over the last three years, we’ve had some incredibly exciting moments, but we’re being bridesmaids. We’re not winning.”

“We haven’t won an Ashes series, we haven’t beaten India home or away, we haven’t won any ICC competition, so in the Caribbean we are bad. When we didn’t beat anyone in the semi-finals, it was a poor performance. Last year in the Champions Trophy, we didn’t win a single game, and now in this World Cup, we’ve probably been over par”, he further clarified his comments.
Michael Vaughan asks ECB to take lessons from Barcelona
To change the scenario, the veteran asked the cricket board to discuss taking some big steps. Vaughan’s comments were directed at those involved in the decision-making process. He recommends minimal changes rather than refreshing the entire team.
“So there has to be some honest conversations. Do I want the whole setup to be torn down? Not at all. But I do want the ECB and the people who have been involved in the decision-making process to come to the table and understand that they have made a lot of mistakes, done some good things too, but accept the mistakes and you can move on”, he said.
As the discussion progressed, Vaughan’s viewpoint became increasingly intense. He talked about how Barcelona chose its coaches from its own ecosystem.
“There will be the odd personnel change needed, and that could be in the backroom team. I look at the Barcelona football method, where Barcelona always promote from within. So they create all these coaches, and when a manager leaves there’s almost like a conveyor belt waiting, you go there, there’s another one”, explained the former captain.
Who will be the next head coach of England cricket team?
The former cricketer, now a cricket expert, exposed the English cricket system. If Brendon McCullum steps down from his post in future, who will take charge? Michael Vaughan expressed concern.
“I’m worried in English cricket that we’ve created a management group that is almost as if if one goes, they all have to go because they’re all in the same mold. Now I think if you’re doing your job really, really well as an England cricket coach, then if you leave the office, there should be a group waiting for you to take over.”
Michael Vaughan said, “At the moment, if Baz McCullum says look, I’ve done a lot, I think, good going, who’s going to do it? There’s no one waiting there, and it’s, to me, a bit of a fault of our system that we’ve allowed that to happen.”
