Zimbabwe batsman Milton Shumba has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match T20 series against India due to a right hamstring injury. Innocent Kaiya has been included as his replacement. The series kicks off, which is scheduled to take place at Harare Sports Club On Thursday, July 23.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza will be hoping to make the most of home conditions in the three-match series. The remaining matches are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the same venues. Meanwhile, India captain Shreyas Iyer will be looking to bounce back after white-ball series defeats to Ireland and England.
Milton Shumba ruled out with hamstring injury
Zimbabwe have suffered a major blow, with Milton Shumba ruled out with a right hamstring injury. Medical scans on Tuesday confirmed the severity of the injury, ruling 25-year-old Milton Shumba out of the entire series.
Milton Shumba featured in all three matches against Bangladesh, his first appearance in this format since 2022. Notably, left-handed batsman Milton Shumba had shown encouraging signs during the series before suffering an injury during training ahead of the India series.
The team management hoped that his left-handed batting would strengthen the lineup and provide another option against India’s spin attack. Milton Shumba’s absence ahead of the opening match is a big blow.
Masoom Kaiya returns as replacement
Zimbabwe Cricket has named experienced top-order batsman Innocent Kaiya as Shumba’s replacement. Kaiya has already joined the team in Harare and is taking part in the team’s final preparations before the first T20 match.
He returned to the national T20I team after a long absence. The batsman last played for the national cricket team in this format in July 2024 against India at the Harare Sports Club. Kaiya will face similar opposition at the same location.
The experienced batsman will now try to make the most of his unexpected comeback. Zimbabwe will hope Kaiya will bring stability to the top order and help fill the void left by Shumba’s injury.
Zimbabwe aims to challenge India on home ground
During the recent series against Bangladesh, Brian Bennett scored 102 runs in three matches, while Dion Myers scored 97 runs. Although Zimbabwe lost the series decider in the last over, the team took confidence after an impressive campaign at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
The bowling attack also impressed during the Bangladesh series. Richard Ngarawa finished as the leading wicket-taker with eight wickets in three matches, while Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans took four wickets each.
Zimbabwe is expected to use the short-ball tactics that troubled India during the recent T20I series against England. Meanwhile, Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza will look to make the most of the familiar home conditions as the two teams face each other in all three matches at the Harare Sports Club.
The hosts have built good momentum in recent weeks and India will have to work hard for every run and wicket. However, India’s batting depth and overall quality gives them the edge. The Shreyas Iyer-led team will start the series with a 1-0 lead by winning the first T20 match.
