Big blow for CSK! Australia star suffers fracture a few days before IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) face injury scare ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) starting from March 28. According to the latest reports, Australian all-rounder Matt Short has suffered a thumb fracture, raising concerns over his availability.

Short was bought by the five-time champion for his base price of Rs 1.50 crore during the auction. Due to his versatility he is an exciting prospect for the upcoming season. His ability to deliver explosive starts and take important wickets makes him ideal for the tactical demands of the team.

Matt Short out of IPL 2026 for CSK?

According to Code Sports, Matt Short has suffered a fracture in the upper part of his thumb. However, the all-rounder is likely to join CSK before the start of the season. Short previously spent a modest stint with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in 2023, where he scored 119 runs in six matches.

The news was confirmed on social media, with a report saying, “Matt Short has a fractured upper thumb but is expected to play for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.”

Before suffering a thumb fracture, Short had also faced disappointment on the international stage. He was initially named in Australia’s preliminary 15-player squad for the World Cup. However, he was unexpectedly left out of the final squad.

The national selectors chose Matthew Renshaw in place of Short. When Short received the news he was in the middle of Australia’s disastrous three-match tour of Pakistan. After playing the final two T20 Internationals against Pakistan, he flew back home to Australia.

Dewald Brevis will be preferred over Matthew Short

CSK’s main focus in the batting department was to strengthen the team with a solid Indian core. They traded Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals (RR) and invested in two promising youngsters, Prashant Veer and Karthik Sharma.

With Indian batsmen like Ayush Mhatre, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dubey and MS Dhoni already in the playing eleven, the team has a very organized batting unit. Due to this strong Indian core, CSK has only one overseas slot left in the batting order.

South African star Dewald Brewis will get his chance before other foreign players. Brewis came in last season as a late replacement for the injured Gurjapaneet Singh. He scored 225 runs in just six matches at an impressive strike rate of 180, which included two half-centuries.

Matthew Short’s role as backup player

The major hurdle for Short in the IPL 2026 season is the strict foreign player quota. CSK already has very strong overseas options in all its departments. While Brevis adds immense explosiveness to the middle order, Noor Ahmed leads the spin attack.

Furthermore, the fast bowling department is completely covered by overseas fast bowlers Henry and Ellis. It will be extremely difficult for the franchise to include Matthew Short in the starting lineup unless injuries crop up in the camp.

The Australian all-rounder appears to be a backup option rather than a first-choice player for the team. Even though he can perform well with both bat and ball, he will still have to wait for his chance on the bench.
