With the approval now in place, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is all set to play a major role in the upcoming IPL season. The venue will host the opening match of the tournament on March 28, where Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will begin their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Apart from the opening game, the Bengaluru venue will also stage a playoff match and the grand final of IPL 2026. This follows the IPL’s long-standing practice of allowing the defending champions to host the final, making the Chinnaswamy one of the most important venues in the tournament this year.
The IPL Governing Council has currently released the schedule only for the first two weeks of the competition. During this phase, the stadium will host another high-profile clash on April 5, when RCB take on their long-time rivals. Chennai Super Kings.
Government committee conducted detailed audit of the stadium
The approval came after a detailed review by a committee appointed by Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara. The panel visited the stadium on Friday and spent the day examining various aspects related to security and match day operations.
Officials checked the structural integrity, entry and exit points, emergency response arrangements and crowd control mechanisms around the venue. The goal was to ensure that the stadium is fully prepared to handle the large crowds that typically attend IPL matches.
The final approval was given after a meeting on Monday between representatives of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), senior RCB officials and members of the expert committee headed by G Maheswara Rao.

RCB will distribute home matches between Bengaluru and Raipur.
Royal Challengers Bangalore will play five of their home matches at the Chinnaswamy Stadium for IPL 2026. However, all their home fixtures this season will not be held in Bengaluru.
Their two matches will be held at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur. The arrangement is part of a previously agreed partnership between the RCB franchise and the Government of Chhattisgarh, which aims to promote cricket in the region and expand the team’s fan base. Despite this split arrangement, Bengaluru will remain the primary home venue for the franchise during the tournament.
Meanwhile, the franchises have not yet announced the official date for the sale of tickets for the IPL 2026 matches in Bengaluru, although the process is expected to begin this weekend as excitement grows for the new season.
