Ben Stokes unhappy with Lord’s pitch after England’s 115-run win over New Zealand in the first Test

England Would have achieved a definite victory by 115 runs new zealand In the opening Test at Lord’s, but the captain ben stokes He was not impressed with the surface that hosted the match. Despite leading his team to important wins, Stokes openly criticized the pitch and described it as unsuitable for the longest format due to its unpredictable behavior and uneven bounce throughout the match.

The four-day Test ended with England taking a 1–0 lead in the series, but the nature of the wicket soon became one of the biggest talking points. With wickets falling regularly and batsmen on both sides struggling to settle, the match was completed after only 996 balls in four innings – the fewest balls bowled in a full Test at Lord’s since 1888.

Ben Stokes expressed concern over the quality of Lord’s pitch

Stokes, known as one of Test cricket’s strongest supporters, expressed disappointment that the match was heavily influenced by the pitch rather than a balanced contest between bat and ball.

Reflecting on the conditions, the England captain rejected the notion that modern batsmen lack the patience to survive challenging conditions. Instead, he pointed to the inconsistent bounce that made batting difficult throughout the game.

According to Stokes, the spectacle of regular wickets falling may entertain spectators in the short term, but it does not necessarily represent the best version of Test cricket. He said that while days with lots of wickets and fast runs may seem exciting, surfaces with unpredictable bounce create uneven competition and can dilute the quality of the format.

“It’s not just a case that players have lost the ability to bowl the ball. Wickets are falling, balls are flying everywhere… With 16 wickets and 200 runs scored, it’s a good day. But it was an inconsistent pitch. As much as one believes that Test cricket is the best format and should never disappear, it is not ideal,” Stokes said in the post-match conversation.

Tom Latham surprised by the behavior of the pitch

new zealand captain Tom Latham Similar concerns were shared after the match. Although he stopped short of directly criticizing the surface, Latham admitted that he was surprised by the way the wicket behaved during four days of play. The Kiwi captain admitted that both the teams had to deal with similar conditions and hence neither side could claim a loss. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that the pitch was different from what the players expected at the prestigious venue. The unusual nature of the wicket meant that no one batting lineup could establish dominance for long, with the bowlers often aided by the surface.

“We saw a lot of guys getting hit with the gloves today, which to me shows that it’s not necessarily the surface where you can rely on the length the bowler is bowling that keeps guys in the crease.” Stokes added.

MCC admitted that the surface fell less than expected

A confession came after criticism from both captains Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)The owners and patrons of Lord’s said that the pitch was not up to the standards expected in the home of cricket.

MCC Secretary and Chief Executive Rob Lawson Admittedly the surface displayed more variable bounce than desired. He revealed that the combination of unusually warm weather during May and heavy rain before the Test caused difficulties in preparing the wicket.

Lawson said the club was disappointed with the result and stressed that maintaining high standards remained a priority. He also assured that efforts will be made to resolve the issue expeditiously, especially as there are still several major events scheduled at Lord’s this season, including the upcoming Women’s Test between England and India.

“We believe the pitch in this Test showed more variable bounce than we would have liked. We hold ourselves to the highest standards and are naturally disappointed when a surface falls short of those expectations.” Lawson said in a statement.
