Former Team India head coach Greg Chappell, who had a falling out with former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly during his tenure, has supported former ICC official Chris Broad, who had accused the BCCI of covering up Sourav Ganguly.
Recently in a controversy it was said that Chris Broad could not clear the then Indian captain after getting calls from many higher officials. During his recent interview with The Telegraph, which went viral on the internet, he made such despicable attacks while referring to the growing influence of BCCI within the ICC.
The senior match referee, who officiated in more than 600 international games over 20 years, has had his contract cancelled, which was not renewed last year.
Greg Chappell has supported Chris Broad on the allegations against BCCI
Former Indian head coach Greg Chappell has backed Chris Broad to resist the pressure of being ‘generous’ towards former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Senior match referee, Broad revealed that a powerful person had offered to lift the ban on the former captain.
He said that he had received a call to be lenient against the Indian captain, despite the Indian captain not admitting any haste.
He assured that politics was involved from the beginning, and that many were more politically savvy, while some had kept themselves below the radar.
Chappell drags former BCCI chief Jagmohan Dalmiya into controversy
Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, Greg Chappell revealed that former BCCI president, who later became ICC president, Jagmohan Dalmiya had made an offer to the Australian asking him to make some ‘arrangements’ to make Sourav Ganguly available for the tour.
Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya were both involved with the Bengal Cricket Association, as Chappell said Dalmiya offered to reduce Ganguly’s suspension so that he could participate in the Sri Lanka tour.
“Dalmiya offered to reduce his suspension so that he could go to Sri Lanka at the beginning of my tenure,” Chappell said.
“I said no, I don’t want to upset the system; he has to bide his time. It seemed OK for Dalmiya to miss out,” he said.
Know about the incident in detail
It is noteworthy that Chris Broad had fined Sourav Ganguly for the first time after the third ODI between India and Pakistan in Jamshedpur in April 2005. This was during the time when both the rivals played bilateral games.
Prince of Kolkata was banned for 6 matches for repeating the same offense in the same series. The suspension was reduced to four games after a formal appeal was filed in support of the Indian captain.
The Indian captain was then suspended for two more matches, this time by former West Indies World Cup-winning captain and match referee Clive Lloyd. Ganguly had committed two such crimes within 12 months.
