Days after the veteran opener answered his critics with a memorable century at Lord’s, a senior board official has reiterated that the Indian star is an integral part of the national set-up and there is no truth in reports linking him with retirement.
Rajeev Shukla clarified the situation on Rohit Sharma’s future.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla Has completely rejected the rumors that Rohit Sharma is considering retiring from international cricket. Speaking to reporters in Agra during the inauguration of the mini auction for the fourth season of the UP T20 League, Shukla insisted that there has been no discussion within the board regarding the 39-year-old’s move away from the game.
“Rohit Sharma is a part of our team and continues to play. The talks going on in the media and social media make no sense. There is no question of his retirement at the moment.” Shukla said.
His comments come after widespread speculation over Rohit’s future during India’s ODI series against England. After the experienced opener remained weak with the bat for a long time, questions regarding his place in the team intensified, after which reports started coming in that the third ODI at Lord’s could mark his departure in Indian colours. However, Rohit put these rumors to rest in the best way by playing the best innings of his ODI career.
Lord’s masterclass answers critics despite series defeat
Facing mounting pressure, Rohit played a captaincy innings at the prestigious Lord’s Cricket Ground. The right-handed opening batsman scored 138 runs off just 110 balls, becoming the first Indian batsman to register an ODI century at the historic venue. His innings was a blend of brilliant strokeplay and calculated aggression, reminding everyone why he remains one of the premier white-ball batsmen in the world.
Despite Rohit’s brilliance, India failed to cross the finish line as England won the match and took the three-match ODI series 2–1. After this defeat, the tour became difficult for the visiting team, who first had to face a 2–0 defeat in the series against Ireland and then a 4–0 defeat in the T20 series against England.
While the team’s results were disappointing, Rohit’s century changed the narrative about his future, with many believing that this innings was a strong answer to doubts over his longevity at the highest level.

Despite criticism, BCCI supports the current leadership
Apart from addressing the rumors of Rohit’s retirement, Shukla also defended India’s current leadership group amid increasing scrutiny following the team’s mixed performance on the UK tour.
Questions raised on head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill After India’s struggles in both T20Is and ODIs. However, the BCCI vice-president clarified that the board has full confidence in the current structure.
“Everyone has the right to their opinion, but it depends on the selectors to decide who will be in the team and who will not. The Indian team is performing well and winning matches, so there is no need for any changes at the moment.” Shukla added.
