Shreyas Iyer’s recovery journey has now reached its most important phase, with a crucial ultrasound scan scheduled for this month. This scan will decide when Shreyas Iyer can finally begin a proper rehabilitation program at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
With the Indian think tank already working on a new ODI plan for the busy 2026 season, the result of Iyer’s scan is extremely important and could impact how the team prepares for the coming months, especially with the ICC World Cup 2027 in mind.

India’s ODI vice-captain has been out of the team since the third and final ODI against Australia in Sydney. During that match, the stylish batsman received a strong blow to the left side of his rib cage, causing internal bleeding and even a cut on his spleen.

The injury was serious and required quick medical attention, keeping him off the field for a long period. The first scans in Sydney revealed how sensitive the injury was and the BCCI medical team kept him under close care until his condition was stable enough to return home.
Medical examination has confirmed the recovery of Shreyas Iyer.
After returning to India, Iyer’s condition is gradually improving. The Indian middle-order batsman underwent an ultrasonography (USG) scan near his home. The scan report was examined by sports medicine specialist Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, who confirmed that Iyer is making a steady recovery and is moving in the right direction.
Given this progress, the right-hander was allowed to begin simple daily activities and basic isometric exercises to maintain strength. However, he still has not been able to start proper cricket training. Iyer will return to full practice only after the medical team carefully examines his next scan and gives him full medical clearance to proceed to the next phase of recovery.

And that moment will finally come this month. According to India Today report, Shreyas Iyer’s next ultrasound scan is planned in the second week of December. This scan will give doctors a clear picture of how well the spleen and surrounding tissues have healed internally.

Based on the results, Iyer is expected to meet with a specialist, who will draw up a detailed rehabilitation plan that will guide him through the various stages – from light conditioning to controlled training.
Only when the doctors are completely satisfied with his recovery and everything is fine, will Iyer be allowed to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
The Mumbaikar will follow a structured training program at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru, designed to gradually build his way back to full fitness and eventually return to the field.
Shreyas Iyer is unlikely to play in New Zealand ODI matches
The BCCI medical team is taking great precautions, as such injuries require thorough internal treatment before any intense sporting activity. However, it seems unlikely that Iyer will be named in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand, considering how his recovery is going.
The main focus right now is to ensure that the vice-captain recovers properly and quickly without making an early return to cricket. He has already missed the South Africa ODI match at home.
