The Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) generated a total revenue of ₹ 9,741.7 crore for the 2023-24 financial year. According to a Hindu report, in which the Indian Premier League (IPL) is the most profitable enterprise of BCCI, with more than 59% of the overall income of the Indian Cricket Board.

The Indian Premier League, launched in 2008, is considered the world’s best franchise T20 league and has become a major financial assets for BCCI. In particular, the IPL is an annual franchise-based T20 tournament that features 10 teams and attracts top players from both India and abroad.

According to a Hindu business line report, Cricket for Cricket in India (BCCI) generated a Rs 9,741.7 crore in revenue during the financial year, with the contribution of the Indian Premier League (IPL) ₹ 5,761 crore.

Lloyd Mathius, a business strategist and independent director, described the IPL as a “Golden Goose” for BCCI. He highlighted that the tournament was increasing in the price.

“BCCI discovered a Golden Goose – IPL in 2007, now 100 percent of BCCI,” Publication quoted Lloyd Mathius as saying.

“Tournaments are best and media rights are increasing. The IPL also ensures that Ranji Trophy-level players get a playground. IPL will continue to carry forward profitability as it moves forward.”

WPL, media rights, and sponsors promote BCCI’s revenue beyond IPL

The report stated that the BCCI earned 361 crores from non-IPL media rights, especially through the broadcast of the international fixtures of India. Revenue from ticket sales, hospitality and commercial rights for home international matches also contributed to the board’s income.

The launch season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) generated additional revenue for BCCI, successfully hosted three versions of the Women’s Tournament.

The report also said that BCCI has ₹ 30,000 crore reserves, which earns about ₹ 1,000 crore annually in interest. In particular, the board receives about 1,000 crores per year from the International Cricket Council (ICC), which further leads its financial dominance in the global cricketing scenario.

Rediffusion Chief Sandeep Goyal believes that BCCI still has revenue capacity through better commercialization of domestic tournaments such as Ranji Trophy, Dalip Trophy and CK Naidu Trophy.

Goyal also said that the board’s income is not only stable, but is expected to increase 10–12% every year due to growing sponsors, media rights and earnings from the match days.

“The BCCI has immense ability to commercialize traditional formats such as the Ranji Trophy, Dalip Trophy, or CK Nayedu Trophy, which has to sideline non-IPL revenue,” Goyal said.

“… The board has around ₹ 30,000 crore reserves, which alone bring about ₹ 1,000 crore per year interest. These revenue are not only durable – they are ready to grow 10-12 percent annually, thanks to sponsorship, media deals and the earnings of the match day,” Goyal said.
