Former Indian national cricket team captain and selector Chris Srikkanth has blamed Rohit Sharma for the flop show of ODI and Test captain Shubman Gill in the 50-over matches against the Australian national cricket team.
Chris Srikkanth has said that India’s newly appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill is struggling as he is feeling the pressure after taking over the captaincy from the likes of Rohit Sharma.
Perhaps he is also putting pressure on himself after performing in England – Chris Srikkanth on Shubman Gill in place of Rohit Sharma
Test captaincy was quite favorable for Shubman Gill as he scored 754 runs at an average of 75.40 in his debut series and led India to a 2–2 draw against the England national cricket team.
However, Gill has had a bad start to his ODI captaincy tenure. He lost the series 1–2 against Australia and could only score 10, 9 and 24 in the three matches of the series.
On the other hand, Rohit Sharma, who replaced Gill as captain before the Australia tour, scored 202 runs in the series and won the Player of the Series award.
After the conclusion of the ODI series, Kris Srikkanth said that Rohit Sharma could be the reason behind Gill’s flop show as the youngster would be facing the pressure of replacing the veteran as captain. He said:
“After the way he performed in England, maybe he is also putting pressure on himself. He shouldn’t do that and just play his game. He played really well today but got a great ball from Hazlewood.
“More than Shubman Gill getting himself out, it was a wicket-taking ball that got him out. But he looks under pressure, just looking at his body language because he has replaced Rohit Sharma as captain, as well as opening with him.”
On the other hand, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal is not playing – Chris Srikkanth
Not just Rohit Sharma, Kris Srikkanth claimed that Yashasvi Jaiswal also indirectly played a role in Gill’s flop show as his being on the sidelines puts pressure on the India captain to perform well in the middle every time.
“And on the other hand, everyone is asking why Yashasvi Jaiswal is not playing. All this adds to the pressure on him.”
Srikkanth said, “But he will overcome it because he is a brilliant player. He should play his normal game because he is getting his steps and shots right. He is just getting out, that is the only thing. So once he plays some big innings against South Africa at home, he will be set again.”

He smiled like he had scored a century – Kris Srikkanth on Virat Kohli
Virat Kohli was out for two consecutive ducks in the first two matches in Australia, but things changed in the third ODI. He got out on the very first ball and celebrated it by punching. The great batsman of modern times remained unbeaten in the middle till the end and played a brilliant inning of 74* runs. Talking about Kohli, Kris Srikkanth said:
“That sporting nature is the greatness of this great man (on celebrating after getting marked out). He would smile as if he had scored a century. So even after being out for zero twice, he still had a sense of humour, as well as determination. He makes batting very easy by constantly rotating the strike and giving the strike to Rohit Sharma. Because of that the bowlers are unable to understand.”
“The young Virat Kohli was cementing his place in 2011 when we won the World Cup. From there to the level he has reached now is incredible. Think about the mentality required for this. He is still very fit, whether it is fielding, running between the wickets or his overall presence in the field. Just his presence is a vibrant presence. In the run-chase, you will not find anyone like Virat Kohli.”
