BCCI sacks fielding coach T Dilip after India’s disappointing T20 series against England

The Indian national cricket team is all set to make a major change after the ongoing white-ball tour of England. After this tour, the contract of Gautam Gambhir’s support staff is ending and BCCI is now ready to take some important decisions before India’s next tour in Zimbabwe. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer finished the England T20I series with an unbeaten captaincy record of 14.

While two members of Gambhir’s coaching staff are expected to stay, one famous face is likely to end his long-standing stay with the national team, with the BCCI looking for a new face after poor performances across all formats of the game.

T Dileep is unlikely to get another contract from BCCI

India fielding coach T. Dilip is not expected to get another contract, meaning his time with the India national cricket team could be over after the England tour ends this month. Meanwhile, Varun Chakraborty and Harshit Rana are out; Ravi Bishnoi named as replacement for Zimbabwe T20I.

In fact, fielding coach T. Dilip, bowling coach Morne Morkel and assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate all had signed two-year contracts with the BCCI. These contracts will expire after India’s current white-ball tour of England.

However, Morne Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate have extension clauses in their contracts. BCCI wants both of them to remain because they have done good work in the last two years. Gautam Gambhir is also reportedly happy with the work of the bowling coach and assistant coach and wants them to remain a part of his coaching setup in the future.

BCCI ready for big changes after England tour

Therefore, BCCI is planning to make changes in the fielding department and because of this Dilip is unlikely to get another extension. He joined the Indian team as a fielding coach when Rahul Dravid was the head coach. Due to his positive attitude and the energy he brought to the dressing room, he quickly became one of the most popular members of the support staff.

Dilip started the tradition of ‘Best Fielder Medal’ after every match, which became very popular among the players and fans. His motivational talks before and after matches also helped keep the team’s morale high. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rahul Dravid stepped down as head coach.

Batting coach Vikram Rathore and bowling coach Paras Mhambrey also left with him. T was the only member of Dilip Dravid’s coaching staff who stayed and worked with Gautam Gambhir.

BCCI will support Morkel and Ryan, possibility of new fielding coach

But after India’s disappointing Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia, the BCCI removed two Indian members of the support staff, and T Dileep was one of them. A few months later, in May 2025, he returned to the team just before India’s tour of England.

Even after his return, India’s fielding has not improved much. The team dropped many important catches during the Asia Cup. He also made several fielding mistakes during India’s successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

Even during the England tour, his fielding was a matter of great concern. As a result, the BCCI has now decided to move in a different direction and is likely to appoint a new fielding coach. However, Morkel and Ryan ten Doeschate are expected to get extensions because BCCI is also impressed by their work.
