India’s women’s national cricket team’s stellar start to the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has suffered a major blow as young all-rounder Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out of the tournament. Shreyanka’s World Cup dream was cut short due to an ankle ligament injury.
The injury came as a big disappointment for Shreyanka, but it turned out to be a special moment for another young leg spinner, Prema Rawat, who is already in England. Amidst the setbacks, Smriti Mandhana achieved a new milestone in the Women’s T20 World Cup.
Shreyanka Patil ruled out of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026
On Friday, June 19, the BCCI confirmed that Shreyanka Patil suffered an ankle injury while fielding during India’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 match against the Netherlands on June 17, ruling her out of the tournament.
Shreyanka had just started bowling when she ran towards the ball hitting the mid-on area. While trying to stop him, she badly twisted her ankle and immediately fell to the ground. She was in a lot of pain and was not able to stand properly.
The team physio immediately came to the field to examine him. Later, a stretcher was brought and he was taken off the field, and he was sent for a scan, which confirmed a ligament injury.
Shreyanka Patil’s injury curse continues
This is another unfortunate moment for Shreyanka in her career, which has already seen several injury problems. She had already missed the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in 2024 due to a finger injury, and then she suffered calf injuries in both legs.
Later, the Indian all-rounder suffered from a wrist problem due to which she was away from the game for almost a year. He worked hard and finally made a comeback in 2025.
Earlier this year, Shreyanka was also a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)’s successful WPL campaign, but now she has suffered another setback, and that too in the World Cup.
Prema Rawat gets dream India call-up for World Cup
Meanwhile, Prema Rawat has been included in the Indian squad as a replacement for Shreyanka Patil for the remaining matches of the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. The 24-year-old has earned his maiden call-up to the Indian team after his impressive performances for RCB in WPL 2026 and India A.
Rawat was one of the standout performers in the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars, where she took eight wickets and helped India A win the tournament. With seven wickets, she was also the joint-leading wicket-taker on India A’s tour of Australia last year, taking seven wickets in three matches.
The leg spinner was already in England with the India A team when she got the call from the national selectors. Following Rawat’s promotion, Nikki Prasad has been included in the T20 squad, while Minnu Mani has been named in the one-day squad for India A’s white-ball matches in England A.
