Indian cricket is in the grip of fresh uncertainty as Shreyas Iyer is allegedly taking a break from red-ball cricket to manage a long-back problem in front of the two-match Test series against the West Indies at home.
Several media reports claimed that Shreyas Iyer informed the BCCI by email that he is “taking a break from Red-Ball cricket” to deal with the long-standing problem. However, BCCI has not yet officially confirmed Iyer’s decision to get away from the red-ball action.

Earlier, Shreyas was nominated for India’s Captain A for two informal trials against Australia A to pave the way for his test return.
However, Mumbaikar failed to make an impact in the earlier informal tests and then stepped down from the captain and took out the second informal test against Australia A in Kanpur, leaving his test in future and uncertainty.
Well, Shreyas Iyer’s back issue is not new. In 2023, the right -handed batsman underwent surgery to prepare for the ICC World Cup 2019. The problem was returned during India’s Home Test series against England last year, causing them to exclude from the team.

Even Iyer left a Ranji Trophy match for Mumbai. His back cramps were quite serious, after struggling in the nets, he was temporarily removed from India’s central contract before he was restored this year after his impressive performance in forms.
Meanwhile, Indian chief selector, Ajit Agrakar allegedly told Shreyas that he could not handle the physical demands of multi-day matches.
The 30 -year -old is an important player in India’s plans, especially after a dispute over his lapse with the Asia Cup 2025 squad, but his return is now uncertain.

Shreyas Iyer takes a temporary break from tests, white ball is committed to cricket
However, it is being said that Iyer is taking a temporary break from red-ball cricket to work on his fitness and manage a recurring back problem.
This means that it is likely to remember the upcoming Ranji Trophy season for Mumbai. Iyer has played 70 red-ball games, but his body needs time to overcome the physical demands of multi-day cricket.
But the good news is that Iyer is fully committed to continue his white-ball career. He is expected to be part of India’s squad for the White-Ball series in Australia.
This break is seen as a smart move to prolong their overall career. By giving his back time to focus and heal on fitness, Iyer’s purpose is to return strongly into the long format in future.
A source close to Vikas was told by Cricbuzz, “He is only demanding a break. After working on his fitness, he will reset his red ball career and will be strong back.”
