The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released an official statement after two Australian women cricketers were manhandled during the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 in Indore. BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia said that the BCCI will review and strengthen its security protocols to prevent such incidents.

Cricket Australia (CA) reported that two members were allegedly “inappropriately approached and touched by a motorcyclist” on Thursday. The incident happened when the players left their team hotel in the morning to look for a cafĂ©. The FIR was lodged after the team management security was informed about the matter.

Saikia also confirmed that the BCCI will review and enhance its security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. He reaffirmed India’s reputation for hospitality and the Board’s zero-tolerance stance on such behaviour.

“This is an extremely regrettable and isolated incident. India has always been known for its warmth, hospitality and care towards all guests. We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards such acts,” Saikia said in an official statement on the official BCCI handle.

He said, “We appreciate the prompt and effective action taken by the Madhya Pradesh Police in apprehending the accused. The law will take its due course to ensure justice. We will also review our existing security protocols and strengthen them, if necessary, to ensure that such incidents are not repeated.”

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla described the incident involving two Australian women cricketers as ‘unfortunate’. Shukla assured that the BCCI will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and will continue to implement necessary precautions to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“This is an unfortunate incident; such things should never happen. The accused has already been arrested. No amount of condemnation is enough for this incident,” Shukla was quoted as saying by India Today.

He said, “The police are conducting their own investigation and the BCCI will do whatever is necessary from our side. We will continue to exercise caution going forward.”

The Australian women’s cricket team was in Indore for a week. Just a day before the incident occurred, they had played England on Wednesday. After this the team will face South Africa on Thursday and will go to Mumbai for the semi-final match.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar described the incident as shocking and completely against India’s cultural values. Gavaskar urged for strict legal action against the culprit and demanded stringent punishment to ensure justice.

“Yes, I think because we are famous for Atithi Devo Bhava, it is very sad to hear about it. It is a heinous incident without any doubt. The law will definitely take its course, but I hope the guilty person will be punished severely – you lock him up and throw away the keys. I think that is the only way. Just lock him up and throw away the keys,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

The Australian women’s team has had a remarkable campaign in the Women’s World Cup. They are unbeaten and are on top of the points table. Out of the seven matches played, they have won six, while one match ended with no result.
