The controversy regarding the Asia Cup 2025 final is not showing any signs of stopping. It has been almost six weeks since India defeated Pakistan in the final of the Asia Cup 2025 on September 28, but the Indian cricket team is yet to receive the winner’s trophy.

A bizarre situation emerged when the Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian cricket team refused to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president Mohsin Naqvi, who is also the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief and Pakistan’s interior minister.

BCCI to target Mohsin Naqvi over Asia Cup trophy drama in ICC meeting

The Indian team wanted to receive the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board officials or an ACC official, but Mohsin Naqvi was adamant about getting the honour. The incident left fans and officials stunned as Indian players waited on the stage before Naqvi left the venue with the trophy.

According to the latest reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to raise the issue during the ICC board meeting to be held in Dubai this week.

The BCCI is expected to question Naqvi’s behavior during the post-match ceremony and also challenge his eligibility to hold the dual posts as Pakistan’s interior minister and ACC chief.

BCCI ready to challenge Mohsin Naqvi’s dual role in ICC board meeting

The Indian cricket board reportedly believes that this dual role is a violation of the ICC’s governance norms. According to Telecom Asia Sport report, the BCCI “has prepared a list of allegations against Naqvi and intends to challenge his eligibility to hold dual public and sporting office.”

The report further suggests that the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) may support India’s stance. Relations between Pakistan and Afghanistan have also deteriorated after the death of three domestic players in an alleged military attack.

The incident led to Afghanistan’s withdrawal from a scheduled triangular series in Pakistan, further straining relations between the ACB and PCB.

Another IANS report said, “All board heads will meet at the ICC board meeting on Friday, and the issue of the Asia Cup trophy handover – which is still in limbo – will be raised there by the BCCI. As of now, despite a formal letter to the ACC, nothing has emerged on the trophy handover.”

Mohsin Naqvi will not attend ICC meeting; PCB COO Sameer Ahmed Syed will represent Pakistan

On the other hand, Mohsin Naqvi will not attend the ICC Board meeting to be held in Dubai on Friday. Naqvi, who also serves as Pakistan’s interior minister, will be in Islamabad to attend the Senate session, where the 27th constitutional amendment is expected to be discussed and approved.

In his place, PCB Chief Operating Officer Sameer Ahmed Syed will represent Pakistan in the ICC meeting. Reports suggest that Naqvi is unlikely to attend even through video link.

Earlier, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia had confirmed that the board will raise the issue of delay in officially handing over the Asia Cup 2025 trophy during the upcoming ICC quarterly meetings. The BCCI had sent a formal letter to the ACC regarding the matter just ten days before the ICC quarterly meeting, seeking clarification on the delay in handing over the official trophy.
