The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sent an official email to Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi regarding the return of the Asia Cup trophy to India. In response, Naqvi proposed to hold an official handover ceremony in the first week of November for the formal return of the trophy.

India won by five wickets over Pakistan in the Asia Cup final in Dubai on 28 September. However, India refused to accept the medal and trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. Naqvi reportedly canceled the presentation and took back the award, forcing the players to stage a mock celebration.

BCCI slams ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi over Asia Cup trophy impasse

During the ACC meeting on 30 September, BCCI had condemned the actions of Mohsin Naqvi. BCCI said that the trophy should be handed over to India under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla said that the trophy should have been immediately placed under the supervision of ACC.

Despite an apology from the ACC member boards, Naqvi maintained his stance and refused to return the trophy to India. He insisted that the India captain should personally visit the ACC headquarters in Dubai to collect the silverware.

The BCCI stated that there was no reason for the Indian captain to travel to receive the trophy. It is noteworthy that this was the first cricket tournament between India and Pakistan after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and Operation Sindoor.

ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi invites BCCI to receive trophy in November

It is being told that BCCI has again contacted Mohsin Naqvi to return the trophy. Pakistani journalist Faizan Lakhani said that Naqvi suggested a formal handover ceremony in the first week of November, requesting India to send a player to collect the trophy.

“Asia Cup trophy controversy: BCCI once again reaches out to ACC president Mohsin Naqvi for the trophy. “Bring one of your players and get the trophy,” the ACC chief responded, suggesting a ceremony in the first week of November,” Faizan Lakhani wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter).

If Mohsin Naqvi non-cooperates, the trophy may remain in the ACC office until a sensible agreement is reached between the council members.

BCCI still has many options to ensure that the Indian team gets the trophy which it won by defeating Pakistan.

BCCI officials said there is ample time before the next meeting and the board will decide its course of action when appropriate. Meanwhile, the PCB has not responded to requests for comment.

Earlier, BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia condemned the behavior of the ACC President calling it unacceptable and unsportsmanlike. Saikia mentioned that India had deliberately decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the chairman, who also serves as a senior minister of Pakistan.

“We have decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who is one of the senior leaders of Pakistan. It was a conscious decision,” Saikia said.
