The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is ready to review the crushing defeat against Pakistan in the Under-19 Asia Cup final. According to a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI will seek clarity from Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre and head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar in a meeting to be held in the coming days.
India’s campaign ended on a disappointing note after they lost to Pakistan in the Asia Cup final, their only defeat in the tournament. The Indian team dominated the group stage and even defeated Pakistan earlier, but got a complete off day when it mattered most. India were out cheaply in a one-sided final in Dubai.
BCCI to hold detailed review with U19 team management after Asia Cup final
After the crushing defeat by Pakistan in the final, BCCI decided to review India’s performance in the Under-19 Asia Cup. As per Cricbuzz report, the decision was taken during the online Apex Council meeting on December 22.
The board discussed the campaign in detail and agreed that a formal review was necessary, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India expected to seek clarification from the team management in the coming days.
“The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will review the Indian team’s performance in the Under-19 Asia Cup following their 191-run defeat to Pakistan in the final,” the report said.
BCCI to meet U19 captain Ayush Mhatre and coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar
While regular reports will be taken from team manager Salil Datar, direct discussions are also expected with BCCI head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre.
There is also uncertainty over whether player behavior during the final will be part of a formal review. The high-pressure clash saw heated moments between the Indian players and Pakistan fast bowler Ali Raza, drawing attention to on-field conduct.
“While seeking a report from team manager Salil Datar would be standard practice, Cricbuzz understands that the BCCI is also open to discussions with head coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar and captain Ayush Mhatre, a move that goes beyond the normal review process,” the report said.
India will play U19 World Cup after defeat in Asia Cup final
After this defeat, there were sharp reactions from fans on social media and questions were raised whether this team is ready for the upcoming Under-19 World Cup to be held in Zimbabwe. It is noteworthy that the team had consistently performed well before the finals.
The core group is expected to be included in the World Cup squad. Many players have already gained valuable experience at the higher level, and the team has a good balance of batsmen, fast bowlers, all-round options and spinners. The talent pool looks strong, and most roles appear well covered.
In particular, the Asia Cup final highlighted areas for improvement. With the right guidance and calm handling of pressure, the India Under-19 team has the ability to learn from defeat, regroup and mount a serious challenge in the World Cup.
