Mehdi Hasan Miraj and Liton Das are all set to be given life as captains by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Earlier there were reports that Bangladesh national cricket team may have a new captain, but BCB has decided to have full faith in Mehdi Hasan Miraj and Liton Das for the long term.
BCB wants stability and long-term planning, and that is why they have decided to give ample time to Mehdi Hasan Miraz and Liton Das to build a stronger and more settled team.
BCB ends all speculations on Mehdi Hasan Miraj and Liton Das
Miraj will now lead the Bangladesh national cricket team in the African contingent in ODIs till the 2027 World Cup, while Liton will guide the T20I side till the 2028 T20 World Cup. Bangladesh Cricket Board has officially confirmed its expansion.

Liton’s previous tenure was due to end with the 2026 T20 World Cup. But as Bangladesh withdrew from that tournament due to security concerns in India, Liton’s tenure remained incomplete. Now, the star batsman gets a full cycle till 2028 to rebuild the T20I team and inspire a fearless playing style to prepare them for the 2028 T20 World Cup.
On the other hand, Miraj took charge of the ODI team last year and Bangladesh was performing well under his captaincy. The Tigers defeated West Indies in October 2025 and recently shocked Pakistan in the home ODI series. With the ODI World Cup scheduled next year, the BCB wants Mehdi to prepare the team without any uncertainty about his role as captain.
BCB says long-term vision needed
BCB feels that frequent change of captaincy creates pressure and confusion among the players. And again, they want a stable environment where the team can grow, experiment and prepare properly for big tournaments, and that is why the board decided to stick with Liton and Mirage.
“Since the tenure of our T20 captain ends with the 2026 T20 World Cup, the current T20 captain and vice-captain will continue until the next T20 World Cup in 2028,” BCB president of cricket operations Nazmul Abedin was quoted as saying by ESPN Cricinfo.
At the same time, the tenure of our ODI captain is also about to end. Therefore, we feel it is very important that captains can work seamlessly and follow a long-term vision.
Abedin said, “Miraj has already been leading the team for almost a year, and with the World Cup approaching, we thought that giving him this opportunity would help him organize and strengthen the team even better.
In my view, Miraz is performing well and has performed strongly for the team. Keeping all these factors in mind, the decision has been taken to provide a long-term tenure, thereby ensuring that the captain can play a decisive role in shaping and managing the team effectively.

Mohammad Rafiq returns to fix Bangladesh’s spin problems
Meanwhile, former Bangladesh spinner Mohammad Rafiq has been brought back as a spin bowling consultant for a year. The Board believes that Rafiq can guide the young spinners with his experience and passion and strengthen the spin attack from the grassroots level.
Abedin said, “To be honest, we have around eight or ten fast-bowling coaches. But when we look back, we don’t even get three spin-bowling coaches in the country. This is very worrying. We need to develop our own spin coaches. Rafiq is almost a ready-made person who can serve the purpose immediately.”
