Najmul Hussain Shanto Bangladesh falls to Sri Lanka to Sri Lanka from T20I squad

Shunto, currently one of the best batsmen in Bangladesh cricket, has been in the news for some time.

He recently stepped into the Bangladesh Test captain after a 1-0 defeat in the test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team.

Shunto said that he decided to abandon the captaincy for the betterment of the team as three different captains in the formats are not the right way to move forward. In particular, there were three separate captains in Bangladesh – in Tests in Test, Mehidi Hasan Miraz in Odis, and Litton Das in T20I – in three formats.

Indeed, Najmul Hussain Shantio was selected as the Bangladesh team’s all-format captain, but he left the post from T20I captaincy earlier this year and was recently dismissed as OD captain, Mehidi Hasan Miraj replaced him.

Meanwhile, the selectors have decided to completely leave Najmul Hussain Shantio from the T20I team. Shanto played one of the six T20I matches for Bangladesh, despite being part of the squad for the UAE and the previous series against Pakistan, and in 2024, he took an average of just 18.84 in 21 T20I.

Khalid Ahmed, Tanveer Islam, Hasan Mahmood, and Soumya Sarkar were dropped

In addition to shunto, the BCB Selection Committee has dropped Khalid Ahmed, Tanveer Islam, Hasan Mahmood and Soumya government from the T20I squad.

To replace the above ax players, the selectors have included Mohammad Naeem, Naim Ahmed, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin in the squad.

Veteran pacers Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman have been added to the T20I squad after recovering from their respective injuries, and they also played the first ODI of the series against Lanka Lions.

Naim, who has played 35 T20I, has made a comeback to the squad behind a good performance in the domestic season of 2024-25, where he was the most run-goldter in both BPL and NCL T20s.

Talking about the T20i series schedule, the first match is scheduled to be played in Pallekele on 10 July. The next two matches of the series will be played on 13 July and 16 July in Dambulla and Colombo.
