Bangladesh government starts investigation into shocking T20 World Cup 2026 withdrawal

The Bangladesh government has formed a special committee to investigate why the Bangladesh national cricket team refused to participate in the 2026 T20 World Cup. Bangladesh cricket team was going to play in the tournament.

Yet, later, after much drama, the International Cricket Council (ICC) replaced the Tiger Brigade with the Scotland cricket team. A few weeks after the conclusion of the tournament, the government has formed a committee to find out the real reason why the cricket board allowed the cricket team to play in the specific tournament.

Bangladesh withdraw from T20 World Cup

According to media reports, the Youth and Sports Ministry of Bangladesh has constituted a three-member inquiry committee to investigate the matter.

It is important to note that when the BCB went up against India and the International Cricket Council ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, there was a caretaker government led by Muhammad Younis. Following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, 2024, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed as the Chief Advisor to the interim government (caretaker government) in Bangladesh.

Later, after the general elections, Tariq Rahman was elected as the Prime Minister. Under the Tariq Rehman-led government, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to look into the matter as to why the BCB did not allow the cricket team to take part in the tournament.

BCB refused to travel to India

For the group stage, their cricket team had to play in India. But, due to rising tensions, BCB asked the International Cricket Council to shift its venues out of India. Sri Lanka was the joint host country of the tournament, so the BCB demanded that all their matches be shifted from India to Sri Lanka. The board was concerned about the safety of its players.

Controversy erupted after Mustafizur Rahman’s release from the Indian Premier League 2026. Due to the severe reaction, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) asked Kolkata Knight Riders to release the player, and the franchise did so as per BCCI instructions.

“I have already spoken about these issues – why we could not participate in the World Cup of Cricket and where exactly our shortcomings lie in sports diplomacy. These are matters which we must investigate thoroughly.” Bangladesh’s Minister of State for Youth and Sports Aminul Haq said this earlier.

He further said, “In my view, we need to further strengthen our sports diplomacy because sports is a platform where beyond all divisions and political ideologies, we can unite as a nation. Therefore, we must ensure that such mistakes are not repeated in future and through sports diplomacy, we maintain friendly relations and maintain a healthy sporting environment.”

A three-member committee has been formed

As part of the further process, the government has formed a three-member committee for investigation.

“According to an official government order dated May 10, 2026, former additional secretary Dr AKM Oli Ullah will convene a three-member committee comprising former captain and current chief selector Habibul Bashar Suman and Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Faisal Dastagir. The government has asked the panel to submit its report within 15 working days,” Cricbuzz reported.
