Mumbai’s rising openers Ayush Mhatre Created history by scoring his maiden T20 century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 and became the youngest player to score centuries in all three professional formats. The 18-year-old, who is also a rising prospect for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), played a brilliant unbeaten inning of 110 off 53 balls at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday (November 27), helping Mumbai chase Vidarbha’s 193 with 13 balls to spare.
Ayush Mhatre left behind Rohit Sharma’s record
At the age of 18 years and 135 days, Mhatre broke Rohit Sharma’s 19-year-old record of becoming the youngest to achieve the triple feat in this format. Rohit achieved this feat at the age of 19 years and 339 days, which was considered untouched in Indian domestic cricket for a long time. The new achievement puts Mhatre in elite company among notable young achievers Unmukt Chand And Quinton de Kock.
The milestone T20 century completes a rare hat-trick for Mhatre, who registered first-class and List A centuries early in his budding career. His explosive SMAT innings โ which included 8 fours and 8 sixes โ helped him reach his fifty in just 20 balls and complete his century in 49 balls, cementing his dominance as one of India’s most exciting young batsmen.
What made this feat even more remarkable was the timing: The feat came just hours after he was named India captain for the ACC Under-19 Asia Cup 2025, sparking talk of his rapid rise. The innings showcased his distinctive qualities โ clean hitting, fearless shot-making and mature strike rotation โ which drew comparisons to Rohit Sharma himself.
Mumbai’s Ayush Mhatre became the youngest person to score centuries in all three formats – first-class, List A and T20.

Mumbai recover from early collapse to register seven-wicket win over Vidarbha
Mumbai found themselves under pressure early in the chase at 21/2, losing captain Ajinkya Rahane for duck and Hardik Tamore for 1. Mhatre stepped up to steady the innings, first sharing an 88-run partnership with Suryakumar Yadav, who contributed a patient 35 off 30. This partnership allowed Mumbai to gain momentum against the disciplined Vidarbha bowling.
Once set, Mhatre changed gears dramatically in the latter part, dominating the on-side boundary areas with effortless pick-up shots and clean lofts. His final partnership with Shivam Dubey, who scored unbeaten 39 off 19 balls with the help of three fours and three sixes, led to a blistering 85 runs in just 35 balls, leading to Mumbai’s seven-wicket win and their second consecutive Elite Group A win under Shardul Thakur.
With the help of Atharva Tayde’s 64 and Aman Mokhade’s 61, Vidarbha’s earlier score of 192/7 ultimately fell short in front of Mhatre’s talent.

CSK likely to strengthen case for senior-level success
Mhatre’s rise has been closely monitored by IPL franchises, especially CSK, who retained him for the IPL 2026 season after a promising 2025 campaign, where his previous best T20 score was 94. His latest domestic heroics further validates CSK’s long-term investment in him.
With leadership responsibilities in the upcoming U19 Asia Cup and growing rapport with fellow young star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Mhatre is being seen as a senior contender for India’s future. His blend of aggression, composure and technical fluency is cementing his reputation as one of India’s most complete batting talents in the next generation.
