Australia national cricket team head coach Andrew McDonald has dropped a big hint about the Test future of young all-rounder Cameron Green after his flop show in the Ashes 2025-26 series.

Green had a very poor Ashes campaign as his batting average dropped to 24.42, while his bowling average reached 70.75. There were several forgettable moments in the five-match Test series against England, including a strange dismissal at the Gabba, two loose shots in Adelaide and an avoidable run-out at the MCG.

These numbers and errors raise serious questions over his place in Australia’s Test team as they prepare for next season, but overall, his numbers in both the highest level and domestic cricket are hard to ignore despite not playing a lot of cricket due to injuries. He averages 45.52 in first-class matches and an excellent 53.38 in the Sheffield Shield.

Andrew McDonald drops big hint on Cameron Green’s Test future

Amid the noise, Andrew McDonald confirmed that Cameron Green will remain part of Australia’s Test plans for the upcoming season. The coach also shared that the team management is also ready to field Green and Beau Webster together in the same Test XI.

The Australian head coach further explained that they have the No. 5 spot vacant after Usman Khawaja’s retirement and this is where the combination of Webster and Green becomes exciting for the selectors. Both can bat in the middle order, both can bowl, and together they bring the level of flexibility that modern Test teams want.

“I think the answer is yes (if Green continues to be selected). I’ve got to talk to the selectors about it; there are a few other people on the panel as well. But you’ve got Webster and Green potentially playing in the same team, should we look at it that way, so that gives us incredible flexibility,” SEN Radio quoted Andrew MacDonald as saying.

McDonald shows full confidence in Cameron Green

McDonald acknowledged that Cameron Green still has some areas to improve on, but so does every cricketer who is trying to settle into long-term roles, and he is not ready to give up on him, saying it is only a matter of time before his confidence and consistency returns.

The coach added, “But I think he’s [Green] is enough. Anyone averaging this at Shield level would suggest he is ahead of the pack there, and it is only a matter of time before a situation arises where he is performing for Australia. I think he’s got some things to work on on his game, but it’s no different than anyone else.

Have high expectations from IPL: Andrew McDonald

Amid KKR’s drama over Cameron Green not being allowed to bowl against MI in the IPL 2026 clash, McDonald pointed out that all-rounders always face immense pressure and expectations in the IPL and the Australian team, and it is not unreasonable either.

He said that people expect all-rounders like Shane Watson and Andre Symonds to score big with the bat and also take wickets cheaply. He said this level of expectation is difficult for any player, especially one who is still building his career like Green.

However, the coach believes that Green’s journey will move in the right direction with time, but he will have to face the pressure of playing in all three formats and few can handle it.

McDonald said, “I’m sure his career will go up. We know he’s very good. He just has to balance all those expectations, and in particular, playing all three formats, which is a significant challenge for any cricketer, let alone a player who is still learning.”
