Australia achieved a rare batting milestone during the second Test of the Ashes 2025-26 series against England at the Gabba, Brisbane on Saturday, December 6. All 11 Australian batsmen reached double figures in the first innings, marking the first time that the men in baggy green achieved the feat in an Ashes match.

Australia made a huge score of 511 runs in their first innings and took a lead of 177 runs. Mitchell Starc was the top scorer by scoring 77 runs in 141 balls with the help of 13 fours. The home team never looked in trouble, every batsman contributed and there were no major collapses at any stage during their innings.

Every member of Australia’s batting lineup reached double figures. This was the first time he achieved this in an Ashes innings and only the third time in his entire Test history, the previous such occasions having come against India in 1948 and against Sri Lanka in 1992.

England did this twice, in 1894 and 1928. Almost a hundred years later, Australia has now added its name to that rare list. The milestone is all the more remarkable as it is the first time a team has achieved this in a day-night Test.

Australia’s strong batting effort at Gabba in Brisbane

Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Alex Carey and Mitchell Starc all scored half-centuries. Cameron Green, Travis Head and Josh Inglis also scored valuable runs. The hosts added six fifty-plus partnerships.

Alex Carey kept England under pressure in the morning session, although Ben Stokes dismissed Michael Neser early. After Carey’s dismissal, Starc disappointed the England bowlers by scoring a half-century. Starc, Scott Boland and Brendan Doggett extended Australia’s lead to a strong margin.

England worked tirelessly but struggled to get ahead. Braydon Carse took 4 wickets for 152 runs, while Stokes took 3 wickets for 113 runs. Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson and Will Jacques took one wicket each. Starc and Boland made a partnership of 75 runs in 27.2 overs for the ninth wicket, which is the longest partnership of the series.

Australia made a record of more than 500 without any century

Australia recorded one of the highest Test scores without a century from a single player. The Yellow Team had reached over 500 without scoring a single individual century against the West Indies in 2009.

This was the fourth highest Test score made without a single 100-run partnership. Only three teams, Australia in 1969, India in 1985 and England in 2006, have scored more runs without a century partnership.
