Australia head coach Andrew McDonald recently talked about all-rounder Cameron Green’s ODI prospects as he has been battling not only injuries but also poor form over the past year.
Next month Australia will play three ODI matches each against Pakistan and Bangladesh. Green was named in both teams, even though the Pakistan series clashed with the IPL playoffs.

“He can bat up and down the order” – McDonald
Speaking to reporters before the Australian team left for Pakistan, McDonald talked about his desire for a more active role for Green in the ODI team for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.
In his most recent ODI matches, Green has mostly batted at No. 3 or No. 4, including his most recent match in this format when he scored a 47-ball century against South Africa while batting at No. 3 and walking in during the 37th over.
McDonald said that after the retirement of Glenn Maxwell, Cameron Green was being considered in the role of finisher. marcus stoinis.
“I think he’s got the ability to play both upper-order and lower-order. He’s got some power, and we saw in that top series against South Africa last year, he had the ability to finish an innings, and in the absence of Glenn Maxwell, we had that conversation,” McDonald said.
McDonald further added, “The team we are, we keep these things open. Experiment is not the right word, but we will look at different ways of playing as we travel to the 2027 World Cup and where he fits in. We have a few options because of his range of skills, but obviously bowling is a big part of it.”

“He’s able to make plays with the ball” – McDonald
With the next ODI World Cup due to be in South Africa, McDonald said Cameron Green was essentially Australia’s premier fast-bowling all-rounder, with Marcus Stoinis retired and Mitchell Marsh no longer bowling nearly as much.
Green had back surgery in 2024 due to which he was not able to bowl for a long time. In fact, Green’s bowling form had not fully worked out until ipl 2026. There was a lot of drama in the tournament as Cameron Green did not bowl at all in the early parts of the tournament.
Ultimately, he took 7 wickets at an average of 32.72 and an economy rate above 10 runs per over.
“I think he has a big role to play with the ball as well. I think he is capable. It seems like his bowling is progressing. Like the last IPL, the more he bowls in his zone, the more he improves. So, but the good sign is that he is where he is, and in this IPL, the skills are coming back, especially the white ball skills, and he is coming back after the surgery,” McDonald said.
“He’s had a challenging summer” – McDonald
McDonald also spoke about Cameron Green’s poor performances with the bat in recent months. Especially during the Ashes at home and the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka.
“His summer was challenging,” McDonald said. “He hasn’t performed at the level he wanted to. I think people don’t appreciate the sum of all the parts he brings. We want him to average more with the bat. He wants to average more with the bat. But his fielding, his bowling, the package he is, we think he will perform well. It’s just a matter of how we balance across all three formats.”
McDonald also talked about the workload that players like Cameron Green have to go through. Especially when he is the first choice player in all three formats.
“I think batting is incredibly complex and difficult at the moment, players are trying to play in all three formats, and I would ask the question, how many players have been good at playing all three formats? At present, it is incredibly difficult. So, are we asking too much from some players?” He said.
“We’re always talking about how we can improve, how we can get better, and we’re supporting Cameron Green in that journey as well as coaching. So we’re also looking at what we’re doing, and it’s not just about one player. How can we help that player prepare and get the best out of him? Like I said, he’s not where he wants to be, and we’re trying to help him get there. “He’s where he wants to play.”
