Cricket Australia (CA) might be keen to open all doors to host an Ashes match in India, but there are no plans in place as of now that would allow an Australia vs England Test match on Indian soil.
Speculation about an Ashes Test match in India increased after a BBC interview, where chief executive Todd Greenberg hinted at a possible Test match against England in India.
Will the Ashes be held in India?
Greenberg’s comments soon gained momentum as CA is all set to host the inaugural match of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) in Chennai, India. Since the national cricket governing body is exploring the global cricket market, an Ashes match in India also does not seem unnatural.
“We have to be prepared to consider all options,” Greenberg said in a BBC interview.
Todd Greenberg said they are ready to consider all options, but did not specify whether CA is planning to host the Australia vs England match in India. He just gave a hint, no assurance.
Latest reports claim Cricket Australia has no plans to host the Ashes in India
Following Todd Greenberg’s comments, Australia’s local sports website, Code Sports, in one of its latest reports directly claimed: Cricket Australia has no plans to hold an Ashes Test in India despite indications from Chief Executive Todd Greenberg.
The report mentioned that the top official of the Australian Cricket Board showed openness to hosting the Ashes match in India, but there was actually no discussion on the format with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in this regard. Since no formal talks took place between Cricket Australia and the ECB, it is unlikely that an Ashes match will be held in India in the near future.
Since the Ashes is between Australia and England, hosting the prestigious series elsewhere is not possible without concerns and agreements from both the cricket boards. If CA wants to organize matches in India then it will have to talk to the England Cricket Board. If the England Cricket Board agrees to Cricket Australia’s proposal, only then the Ashes can be held outside Australia or England.
Before closing, verbal communication may take a considerable amount of time. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and regional cricket boards in India may also require communication.
Discussion on Ashes in India may take a lot of time
Cricket Australia officials were reportedly engaged in lengthy talks to finalize the BBL 2026-27 opener in Chennai. Before getting the green signal from the Indian cricket governing board, CA officials were to reach Chennai during the IPL 2026 season to take the talks a step forward.
Tamil Nadu Cricket Association was also part of the discussion table, as without their concerns, it would not have been possible to bring the BBL match to the final in Chepauk.
Since the Ashes is one of the most famous rivalries in the world of sports, it may require a lot of discussions if CA wants to play a Test match against England in India.
