In a shocking development, former Australian batting star and 2003 World Cup hero Damien Martyn has been admitted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in Brisbane.
The 54-year-old man is currently in a coma after being diagnosed with meningitis, which developed unexpectedly over the past few days.

Meningitis is a serious inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infection, with bacterial meningitis being particularly serious.

Cricket Australia (CA) has issued a statement expressing its full support towards Martin and his family. “I am saddened to hear about Damien’s illness. Former teammates have also shared messages of support for Martin and his family. Adam Gilchrist, who is Damien Martyn’s close friend and his former teammate in Australia and Western Australia, confirmed that the former cricketer is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital.
“He’s getting the best treatment possible, and (Martin’s partner) Amanda and her family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and well wishes,” Gilchrist said.
On the other hand, former Australian bowler Rodney Hogg has described Martin’s hospitalization as ‘shocking news’. “We wish him all the best,” Hogg said on 6PR radio.

Damien Martyn enjoyed a successful international cricket career and was known for his smooth, effortless batting style. He made his Test debut for Australia at the age of just 21 during the home series against West Indies in 1992–93. He played 67 Test matches and scored over 4400 runs at an impressive average of 46.37, which included 13 centuries and 23 fifties.
Martin was a key part of Australia’s historic Test series win in India in 2004, finishing as the team’s top scorer in four of the eight innings. He also captained Western Australia at a young age, highlighting his leadership qualities.
