Legendary Indian spinner and former head coach Anil Kumble has strongly defended Shubman Gill and put the entire blame on Yashasvi Jaiswal for his heart-breaking run out on the second day of the ongoing second and final Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who had looked unstoppable on the first day, was run out for 175 after a dreadful mess-up with captain Shubman Gill, leaving the Delhi crowd silent and the dressing room stunned. Resuming his innings at 173, the young Indian opener looked confident and composed as he continued his excellent start.

But just two overs into the morning session, disaster struck. The Mumbaikar pushed the ball straight to mid-off from Jayden Seales and immediately raced for a run. However, Gill showed no signs of responding to the call and remained at the non-striker’s end.

This proved very costly for Yashasvi, as Tangerine Chanderpaul took a sharp throw and wicketkeeper Tevin Imlach blew the bails in one fell swoop.

There was silence in the entire stadium as a dejected Jaiswal returned to the pavilion, just 25 runs short of his memorable double century. It was a brutal end to his impressive innings and Kumble called it a clearly wrong decision by the young opener.

It was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s mistake: Anil Kumble

The former Indian head coach has pointed out that there was no real run available as the shot went straight to the fielder, leaving Jaiswal with no chance to make his ground.

“It was Yashasvi Jaiswal’s mistake. He wouldn’t have even reached the non-striker’s end because it went straight to the mid-off fielder. There was absolutely no chance,” Anil Kumble said during the post-lunch show on Jio Hotstar.

The only doubt was whether the keeper had complete control of the ball when the bails fell. But the umpire did not even send it to the third umpire and that was a bit of a surprise for me.”

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s aggressive attitude surprised Anil Kumble on the second day of Delhi Test

Adding to the disappointment, Kumble also pointed out that Jaiswal’s rhythm seemed a little different from his first day at the crease. The youngster appeared more keen to increase his scoring rate rather than getting back to his steady and composed rhythm, which surprised Kumble.

The great spinner further added, “His approach was a little different today. I thought he would be back to the mindset of the first session yesterday morning, but he continued from where he left off yesterday evening. It was a bit of a surprise for me. He was ready for a long, long innings.”

Darren Ganga blames Shubman Gill’s delay for Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out drama

Meanwhile, former West Indies opener Darren Ganga has also shared his views on Yashasvi Jaiswal’s dramatic run-out. Ganga blamed wrong decisions and a late reaction from Shubman Gill for Yashasvi’s run out in Delhi.

Darren Ganga said on the same show, “It was risky; he shouldn’t have taken it, especially well set at the start of a new day. But from the coaching manual, you would say the non-striker should respond to his partner, but Gill was seeing the ball. His delayed reaction unsettled Jaiswal.”
