‘Angry’ Marco Johnson almost breaks stumps with bat after missing century in Guwahati Test

South African all-rounder Marco Johnson missed out on his maiden Test century on the second day of the second and final Test against India at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati (Sunday, November 23). After his dismissal in the innings, the right-handed batsman almost broke the stumps while expressing his frustration.

Jensen added 97 runs from 106 balls with Senuran Muthusamy for the eighth wicket. Muthusamy was out on 106 runs off the bowling of Mohammed Siraj. Johnson continued to add runs with Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj, taking the team to 489 runs in 151.1 overs. He was the last batsman to be dismissed in South Africa’s innings.

Marco Jansen’s excellent innings ended in disappointment as he missed out on his maiden first-class century. After dominating India’s bowlers with a flurry of fours and seven sixes, he adopted a more cautious approach as he approached the feat.

That change in momentum proved costly. Kuldeep Yadav bowled a googly outside the off stump, and Jensen’s tentative push produced an inside edge that rolled back onto the stumps, leaving him stranded on 93. With his dismissal, South Africa’s innings ended at 489 runs.

Johnson was clearly angry and walked off without caring about the applause of his teammates and the Guwahati crowd. His aggressive innings had already put South Africa in a strong position, leaving India with a big challenge to survive in the series.

South Africa was out for 489 runs in the first innings

India started the second day with the aim of taking South Africa’s remaining wickets quickly. However, Senuran Muthusamy and Kyle Verreynne batted with remarkable control throughout the morning, leading to the first wicketless session of the series.

Muthusamy scored his first Test century and took the total score past 400. After Vereen was out, Jensen launched an explosive counter-attack. He scored 93 runs in 91 balls hitting 6 fours and 7 sixes. Ultimately South Africa collapsed for 489 runs.

Earlier on Day 1, the top order got starts but failed to convert them into goals. India’s bowlers, especially Kuldeep, made a comeback before stumps on the first day and restricted the score to 247/6.

Johnson broke many records during his knock

Johnson became South Africa’s second-highest scorer against India with 9 points or less. He hit seven sixes, which is the most by a visiting batsman in a Test innings in India. The batsman also equaled the South African record for most sixes in a Test innings.
