Former England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff has parted ways with the Hundred franchise Northern Superchargers as head coach following a disagreement over pay with the new owners of the Hundred franchise Northern Superchargers, who also own Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL.

Andrew Flintoff is often regarded as one of the most charismatic figures in the history of English cricket and will always be remembered as an Ashes hero in the country. However, the former all-rounder has taken up coaching roles in recent times, as he was seen in such roles for the English team as well as Northern Superchargers.

The team finished fourth in 2024 before reaching the Eliminator (third) this year under Flintoff’s leadership. The franchise is based in Headingley, Leeds and was not having many of the desired results before Flintoff took charge in 2024.

Andrew Flintoff parted ways with Northern Superchargers

Andrew Flintoff said he would like to remain in the role of Northern Superchargers head coach, but said he could not do so if he was paid much less than other head coaches in the tournament.

“Unfortunately, I’m not going to do that, which is sad. Over the last two years I felt we were building something really good and I would love to see it through. We’ve got new owners. I spoke to them. They called, they said they want us to do it, so I said: ‘Yeah, OK. Make us an offer,’ the 47-year-old said on the Beard Before Wicket podcast co-hosted by the Superchargers and England spinner. Adil Rashid.

The Superchargers job was Flintoff’s first coaching role, having previously also been put in charge of the England Lions team. He will remain with the team, overseeing the main England team during the upcoming Ashes tour in Australia.

Flintoff feels his current salary doesn’t make him feel valued as Northern Superchargers head coach

Andrew Flintoff’s words have made it clear that he is unhappy with his recent wages, and that he could not agree on terms with the franchise’s new owners, Sun Group, who also own IPL franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad.

“I don’t really do it for the money, although it’s nice, but I’m worth more than a quarter of it [salary of] Other head coaches,” he said. “I wasn’t encouraged that they wanted me anyway, but still you want to feel valued. So, I said it wasn’t going to work for me, and they weren’t going to move forward with it.”

Sun Group now owns a 100 percent stake in the franchise, having sold 51 percent control to them, in addition to the 49 percent Yorkshire acquired through an auction. The owners, who also own Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20, claim to have offered Flintoff a pay rise.

“We discussed with Freddy and made an offer which was higher than his current salary at Northern Superchargers. Although we would have liked to keep him on board, we respect his decision,” a spokesperson was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Andrew Flintoff confirms he has received ‘a few offers’ for head coach role

While the likes of Daniel Vettori could be considered for the role, the SRH head coach is currently in charge of another team in The Hundred, Birmingham Phoenix.

However, Andrew Flintoff has claimed that he has received several offers but has not decided anything on the matter. With franchises like Manchester Originals and Trent Rockets soon to be on the lookout for a new person as head coach, Flintoff could attract attention as a viable option.
