Fans rejoiced as the Amol Muzumdar-coached Indian women’s team lifted their first World Cup trophy at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday, November 2. Indian women cricketers fulfilled a long-awaited dream and recomposed themselves after the first two defeats, turning the night into an unforgettable celebration.
In the final match, Team India won over South Africa by 52 runs. It was more than just a victory for the players on the field. The victory was sealed when captain Harmanpreet Kaur completed the catch off the ball of Deepti Sharma. Notably, this was India’s first ICC trophy in women’s cricket.

Muzumdar took over as head coach in 2023. He quickly gained the trust of the players and brought clarity and direction to the dressing room. Under his guidance, senior players like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma flourished.

Amol Muzumdar could not control his emotions after India won their first ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title and described the achievement as a defining chapter for the game in the country.
The former batsman expressed immense pride in the group, noting that their determination and belief have made the country proud. Muzumdar said that the team has become invincible after learning from the close defeat.
“I’m speechless. Absolutely proud. They deserve every bit of this moment. Hard work, belief – they have made every Indian proud,” Muzumdar said after the match.
“We never let the early setbacks deter us. We dominated most of the matches but just needed to perform better. Once we did that, there was no looking back,” he said.

Since assuming the position, Muzumdar has given priority to fitness and fielding. He said the intensity of the performance in the final was a testament to how much the team had evolved. Muzumdar described the win as a transformational milestone for women’s cricket.
“It was something we talked about a lot in the dressing room. The energy on the field today showed how much they have evolved. I couldn’t have asked for anything more,” Muzumdar said.
He said softly, “This is a historic moment. Its impact will be felt for generations.”
When invited to bat, India posted a competitive score. Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma and Richa Ghosh took the score to 298, giving the hosts a strong platform in the final.
Laura Wolvaardt scored a century, but the rest of the batsmen failed to perform well. Deepti Sharma took five wickets and Harmanpreet Kaur took the final catch to seal the victory and end the contest. India joined Australia, England and New Zealand as champions of the tournament.
