Sanju Samson’s omission from India’s T20I squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe has become the biggest talking point among the Indian cricket fraternity. Amidst the criticism, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has now openly raised questions on the attitude of the selectors.
The former Indian batsman believes the wicketkeeper-batsman has been treated unfairly despite playing a key role in India’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign earlier this year. Who dropped Sanju Samson against Zimbabwe? Report reveals the role of India’s decision makers!
After ignoring Sanju Samson, Aakash Chopra questioned the thinking of the selectors.
Sanju Samson has been in trouble after scoring only six runs in three T20 matches during the Ireland and ongoing England tours. The selectors decided to go ahead with teenage sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi and include Punjab Kings wicketkeeper-batsman Prabhsimran Singh for the India debut.
However, Aakash Chopra feels that the decision is too harsh for Samson, who has already proved himself on the international stage. Chopra stressed that there is a big difference between resting a player for tactical reasons and completely parting ways with him after a few poor performances. He criticized the attitude of the selectors and team management.
The cricket pundit made it clear that he has no problem with Vaibhav Suryavanshi getting a chance, but he questioned whether giving a chance to one player should be at the cost of completely dropping another proven performer from the team. He also said that there is no guarantee that Vaibhav will continue to perform in every series.
Aakash Chopra criticized Sanju Samson, raised big questions on Vaibhav Suryavanshi
“It doesn’t happen that you make space for someone and that’s why you completely make the other person disappear. And who is that person? That person is the one who won you the World Cup,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
This is not someone who is a non-performer. He failed in three innings, and you have forgotten everything. I mean, it worries me a little. This hurts my heart a little. Because what is the guarantee that Vaibhav Suryavanshi will continue to perform well?”
Chopra wondered whether constantly changing players is really the best way to build an established T20 team. He further added, “And if Vaibhav doesn’t perform well, you have already turned to Prabhsimran Singh. But is that a long-term plan? Because Sanju is not 35 or 38 years old.”
sanju samson still has age
Chopra admitted that Samson has often struggled with consistency during his career, but should not forget what he did for India. He said that some tough calls are inevitable, but they must also be balanced and fair, and he is really sorry for Samson.
He said, “Sanju is still a young guy. Who gets old at 31? His career has been a bit inconsistent. There’s no doubt about that. And sometimes you have to take tough decisions. I was listening to Ravichandran Ashwin too. And he was absolutely right. Sometimes you have to take tough decisions. You have to sit someone out. But it’s ugly and it’s not very good.”
