Ajit Agkar addressed uncertainty around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI future
Slocked after India’s test series in England, reports claimed that Rohit and Kohli, both retired from Test cricket earlier this year, would play their final international series in Australia. The speculation stems from the suggestion that the BCCI wanted senior players to focus on domestic tournaments if they want to remain in dispute for future ODIs. Addressing these rumors, Agarkar clarified its stance during the team’s announcement for the ODI and T20I series in Australia.
He admitted that he had no knowledge of whether the tour of Australia would be final in the colors of India. “This is the format they are playing currently. We have chosen them [for Australia]… as far as 2027 World Cup is concerned, I do not think we need to talk about it today. You do not have to think too far at this point; The team has been selected for Australia, and we just need to score them as they have been through their career, ” Agkar was called by Hindustan Times.
Agarkar’s non-Creator response suggested that the selection committee is adopting a demonstration-first policy for veterans. With India’s new leadership structures entering an transition phase, both Rohit and Kohli’s roles can develop based on their form and commitment to the ODI format.

Rohit and Kohli’s World Cup World Cup
While Agkar refrained from making any definite statement about the participation of his World Cup, he indirectly underlined the path that can protect their places ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa. The chief selector emphasized the importance of domestic cricket as a proven ground for all players, even though seniority. “I think we made it clear a year or a few years ago that whenever the players are available, they should play domestic cricket. This is the only way you will keep yourself fast and match-taiyar, especially if you had a long break.” The chief selector said.
He said that participation in India’s 50 -over 50 -over domestic competition Vijay Hazare Trophy can play a major role in selection decisions. “Whether it is possible with the international program or not, only time will tell. But if people are independent, they should play domestic cricket,” Agarkar concluded.
Agarkar’s comments strengthened the idea that the experience alone can no longer secure automatic selection. BCCI is intended to ensure a level playground, where performance and participation, not prestige, direct India’s inclusion in future white balls.
