Great Australian captain Steve Waugh has suggested Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to be cautious as he said that the game is bigger than the individual.
He has also suggested that the chief selector should be honest with his players about their future.
Rohit Sharma shines on return
Indian legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma made their international comebacks during India’s tour of Australia last month. Rohit Sharma made a commendable comeback by scoring 202 runs in three matches and batted at an average of 101.
On the other hand, Virat Kohli was out twice for ducks in the final match at the Sydney Cricket Ground and then scored a brilliant 74*. Steve Waugh gave some advice to the Indian legends as well as the Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
“You can’t put yourself above the game” – Steve Waugh’s advice to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma
Steve Waugh, the greatest of Australian captains, shared some important advice with three of India’s most prominent faces in present-day cricket. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, whose ODI future lies in the hands of BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar, have received conflicting suggestions.
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their retirement from Test as well as T20I formats, and both are now 37 and 38 respectively, and will be aiming to play the World Cup despite the final two years of their careers.
“Players have to take some responsibility and realize that the game is bigger than the individual. You can’t put yourself above the game. You have to realize that the game moves on and someone else will take your place. You are not irreplaceable. So I think players can’t dictate the game. At the end of the day, the chairman of selectors has to take a decision for the greater good,” Waugh told senior journalist Vimal Kumar when asked about Kohli and Rohit for the rest of their careers. I have been asked.
“You have to keep some distance because sometimes you have to take tough decisions” – Waugh’s contrasting advice to Indian selectors
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are likely to be in the race for the 2027 ICC World Cup, even though they will be around 39 or 40 years of age by the time of the next World Cup. The responsibility of selection in the series to be held before the World Cup will rest with selector Ajit Agarkar.
He has advised that as a selector he should not be too close to his players as this makes the decision to drop any player from the team difficult. Steve Waugh said, “As chairman of selectors you have to be open and honest with the players. You need input. I don’t think you can afford to be too close to the players. You have to keep some distance because sometimes you have to take difficult decisions.”
He said, “Every chairman has a different way of working. I hope Ajit Agarkar has a good relationship with the players, but he also has to keep some distance. Communication with experienced players is very important – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma – what are you thinking? At the end of the day, the chairman of selectors has to take a call.”
