South Africa will take on New Zealand for the first semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 on March 4. The South Africa vs New Zealand match will be held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, the same venue where India took on West Indies in the Super 8 match.
During the pre-match press conference, South Africa captain Aiden Markram revealed that he watched the India match closely to gather some information about the pitch. After inspecting the surface he looked quite confident and said that they will decide on the playing XI tonight, the night before the match.

Ahead of the first semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand, Aiden Markram said, “Watched the India vs West Indies match closely. Just saw the pitch and it looked quite good. Looked like deep clay. We will decide on the XI tonight.”

The experienced batsman also said that the outcome of the match is decided by the performance on the field. As the captain of the team, he is well aware of the fact that if they can perform as per their plans and potential, they will be able to make a difference against their rivals New Zealand.
“As a captain, you want to help the team win, don’t just focus on seeing and playing the ball… make proper efforts to separate the two, and if you make proper efforts, you contribute to the win”, the captain further said at the press conference in Kolkata.
Aiden Markram on ‘favourite’ tag
On pen and paper, South Africa looks stronger than New Zealand. Ahead of the semi-finals, many critics and fans believe that the Proteas are the favorites to snatch this important match from the Blackcaps. Although Aiden Markram does not consider him a favourite. They are on a mission to present their best brand of cricket in the match.
“That’s people’s opinion. We’re just trying to focus on the game, playing exciting cricket which we’ve been doing for the last 18 months.” Markram replied being the favourite.
Markram knows how to defeat the Kiwi team
The Proteas, who have been an undisputed force in the ongoing title race, have a clear vision of overcoming all the tough challenges. It’s all about execution as per the reading conditions and match conditions, under pressure, the South African leader was clearly briefed.
“It’s about making good decisions under pressure, reading situations well. It makes a big difference and it’s ultimately about executing well. There’s a clear direction in which we’re trying to move on the day”, Aiden Markram told the media ahead of the first semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
