Despite the second whitewash within a span of 12 months, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and men’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar are likely to continue in their roles with no major changes made by the BCCI.
India recently suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in the history of the game. For the second time in 12 months, the team has faced defeat from visiting teams in a home series. First in 2024, New Zealand defeated them 3-0 and now in 2025 South Africa.
After the defeat, Gautam Gambhir faced more criticism from the players who actually failed to perform. He was criticized in Guwahati and by the Indian media for his poor performance in the format.
BCCI will not take any major action against Gautam Gambhir after his humiliating performance in Test.
The defeat against South Africa was India’s third consecutive series defeat in Test cricket and second defeat at home since Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of the Indian team.
After the defeat in the Guwahati Test, the press took aim at the Indian head coach and he was asked whether he felt he was the right person to continue in the role of Team India in Test cricket. The former Indian player immediately slammed the BCCI for taking such decisions.
Despite the series defeats, consistent poor performances and controversial strategies that have often been unfavorable for the Indian head coach, the BCCI is not keen on making any managerial changes. They are likely to continue with the same group of players as well as team management officials.
“The BCCI will not be hasty in taking any decisions; the team is in a period of change. As far as coach Gautam Gambhir is concerned, we will not be taking any decisions on him as the World Cup is round the corner and his contract is till the 2027 World Cup. The BCCI will talk to the selectors and the team management, but no hasty action will be taken,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Gautam Gambhir has blamed the entire team for the defeat in Guwahati.
Speaking in Guwahati, Gautam Gambhir was asked where the responsibility for the defeat begins. Gambhir immediately hit back:
He said in the press conference, “Everybody in that dressing room, and it starts with me, everybody in that dressing room. I’m not a guy to say it’s with
After identifying every player and official in the dressing room responsible for the defeat, he returned to India’s batting in the first innings and highlighted that their batsmen had lost too many wickets to give the Proteas an early advantage, which they never really relinquished.
Gautam Gambhir wants many excuses, not excuses.
However, considering such a humiliating defeat, especially on home ground, BCCI is unlikely to make any changes, they may call a meeting to discuss the strategy going forward.
Speaking in Guwahati after India’s Test series loss, head coach Gautam Gambhir reiterated several times that he does not like to make excuses, but during the long press conference he kept blaming either the young team or India’s transition period and finally cited poor scheduling as one of the reasons that led to the defeat.
