Former India cricketer Sarandeep Singh has questioned the credit given to Punjab Kings (PBK) head coach Ricky Ponting to reach the final of IPL 2025. Singh said that domestic coaches of players like Priyanas Arya and Prabhasimran Singh also play an important role in the performance of the team.
Punjab Kings led by Shreyas Iyer made it in the final of IPL 2025, but were defeated by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). He finished the season without the trophy. This was the second time when the Punjab -based franchise lost the IPL final. He lost to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2014 edition of the first IPL.

“Ricky Ponting became the coach of Pbks. Everyone said that he is a very good coach. What he must have explained differently? You have performed and gone there. He just made you to play there,” Saradip said.

Sarandeep Singh said that selection in IPL or Indian team is based on performance rather than reform. He said that domestic coaches play an important role in preparing players for high-level competitions, even if the environment and experience is different at the top level.
“If you are selected in IPL or India, you are chosen to perform. There is no improvement scene. It is only about man management,” Sarandip said.
“If you don’t perform in domestic, how will you go there? The coaches that have worked with you, they know you better and have seen your growth. Yes, experiences and environment are different,” he said.
Priyash Arya and Prabhasimran Singh impressed Punjab Kings opening
Punjab Kings chose Priyanus Arya and Prabhasimran Singh as the initial pair, which proved to be effective in IPL 2025. The young batsmen added 528 runs at the top of the order and on an average at a strike rate of 44 and 178.4.
Priyanash played his first season after being bought for ₹ 3.8 crore. He scored 475 runs in 17 matches on an average of 27.94 and a strike rate of 179.24, including a century and two fifties. He showed a fearless approach against some of the best bowlers in the league.
Prabasimran, who has been with PBK since 2019, was his most successful season. The right -handed batsman scored 549 runs in an average 17 games of 32.49 and a strike rate of 160.52, including four half -centuries. Both have not made their international debut.
