The Afghanistan vs South Africa T20 World Cup 2026 match on 11 February required two Super Overs to reach its conclusion. It was the South Africans who had the last laugh, and it was a very tough period for Rashid Khan and his boys, who suffered two consecutive defeats in the tournament.

After the match against South Africa, Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott described the defeat as “devastating”. He also made special mention of the excellent performance of Rahmanullah Gurbaz.

There was a very close contest between these two sides. Two super overs were included in the competition to determine the winner. South Africa, the most experienced team compared to Afghanistan, maintained patience and won the match on the last ball of the second super over.

Jonathan Trott praised his boys

Jonathan Trott praised the team’s efforts and admitted that he found the result very hard to believe. They also put up a good fight against New Zealand before facing South Africa. On both occasions the efforts made by the Afghans went in vain.

Only the top two teams from each group will be eligible to play the Super Eights round. From Group D, after two consecutive defeats to Afghanistan, the Proteas and Kiwis are now favorites to qualify.

Trott said in the post-match press conference, “It shows what we have in our team. So, we have some amazing players, and after a tough defeat in a tough group a few days ago against New Zealand and now also against South Africa, it is really devastating for the guys.”

Trott highlights challenging circumstances surrounding Afghans

The former England international compared the challenges that Afghanistan cricketers faced not only on the field but also off the field. The rise of Afghan cricketers is nothing but an inspirational story that will inspire generations in the country. Therefore, Trott said that despite the defeat, his students should be proud of the fight they put up against South Africa.

The head coach said, “These guys have never shied away from facing the challenges that come their way on and off the field throughout their lives. So, they should be very proud today, and obviously, these types of losses can hurt sometimes and sting for a while, but I think it’s important that we focus on the areas that we performed really well in, but also focus on the areas that we can improve on and things that we could have done better.”

Why did Afghanistan lose to South Africa?

According to the coach, fielding played a big role in the outcome of the match. Jonathan Trott praised the South African players for their efforts while fielding.

“I think South Africa fielded really well. Run outs, a few catches on the boundary, on the ring, things like that. I think they fielded really well. That was probably the difference today, a little bit”, he explained.
