Abhishek Sharma gets emotional after courageous innings in Chennai

Abhishek Sharma responded to his critics with the bat. Under immense pressure, Abhishek Sharma scored 55 off just 30 balls to lead India to a stunning 72-run win over Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup 2028 Super 8 clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Abhishek Sharma silenced his critics by scoring an explosive half-century.

Before this Super 8 match, the young Indian opening batsman had scored three wickets and 15 runs against South Africa in his four matches in the tournament. This slump led many cricket experts and former cricketers to question his place in the playing eleven. There was immense pressure on him.

But this player from Punjab did not back down. They started slowly with Sanju Samson at the other end, but when they got the chance, they attacked Tinotenda Maphosa. Once he found the rhythm, the left-handed batsman played fearless cricket and entertained the Chennai crowd.

He scored 55 runs in 30 balls as India defeated Zimbabwe by 72 runs in the Super 8 game on 26 February. After India’s big win over Zimbabwe in Chennai, Abhishek admitted that he felt a huge relief after the intense reaction from all sides.

‘The team believed in me when I didn’t’: Abhishek Sharma

He said that even when he did not believe in himself, the team believed in him. Describing the dressing room as a family, the Indian opener revealed that the Indian coach, captain and teammates stood by him in his darkest days and that support was really important to him.

“Of course, there is a relief, but the day I spent with the team made me feel like they had more confidence in me. So, I think that was something that I really enjoyed and actually made me a little emotional as well. I was not doing so well; I was trying my best, but still the results were not coming, the results were not coming at the best,” Abhishek Sharma said in a video posted by the BCCI.

He added, “But the way the teammates and the coaches, they all wanted me to do well. I think that was the best thing, one of the best feelings I’ve had all these past days. It really means that, you know, you’re just a family; it’s not just a team. So you’re so close to all the teammates and all the coaches, like they really want you to do well, and I was just looking forward to this day.”

Abhishek spoke openly about his illness

His journey in this tournament started with a difficult phase. The 25-year-old fell ill during the opening game against USA in Mumbai. He had high fever and still played but was out for a golden duck. He was admitted to hospital and then had to miss the Namibia match due to weakness.

Abhishek further added, “It didn’t start the way I wanted; I was actually in the hospital, and I wasn’t feeling that good, you know, I could have played the first game for the country, and that was in the World Cup as well, and it was not a positive start or maybe the best start that I wanted.”

He admitted that he felt like he would miss the T20 World Cup 2026, but captain Suryakumar Yadav and coach Gautam Gambhir gave him strong support which gave him strength.

The Punjab player further added, “Still, I feel the support, love and teammates that they have shown me all these days, especially the coach and the captain. It doesn’t matter if you score one and zero, maybe get out early, you are going to play all the games, and you are going to win the games for the team. So, I think it is very important as a player to get the support from the team and the coaches.”

Abhishek dedicated his Chennai performance to his team, saying that he “loves this team” and that his teammates “really wanted me to perform really well.”
