Former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq recently made a big revelation about the confrontation between former captain Shahid Afridi and young fast bowler Mohammad Amir after he faced serious allegations of spot-fixing during the Test match against England at Lord’s in 2010.

Pakistani players surrounded in 2010 match fixing scam

Former Pakistan all-rounder Abdul Razzaq has revealed that former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi slapped 18-year-old Mohammad Amir after learning about the spot-fixing scandal in 2010.

Pakistani fast bowlers Mohammad Aamir and Mohammad Asif bowled no-balls on certain occasions in the Test match against England at Lord’s. It was pre-planned by bookies and organized by the then captain Salman Butt.

This news was then exposed by News of the World through a sting operation. This had major consequences and all three players involved in the act were sentenced to jail.

Abdul Razzaq revealed that he had a friend in London who repaired phones, which brought the incident to his attention. He told that when Mazhar Majeed’s phone got fixed and started working, he received many such messages in which he and the three players were related.

Razzaq said in a TV show, “What happened was that Mazhar Majeed came to my friend and asked him to fix one of his phones. When my friend managed to turn on the phone late at night, he got several messages about a plan to spot-fix a match between Mazhar and three players.” PTI.

He then confirmed that it was he who had informed him about the messages and that he had passed the information on to then captain Shahid Afridi.

Razzaq recalled, “Afridi called Aamir, who was just 18 at the time, to his room and asked me to wait outside. I could hear Afridi getting angry and asking him to tell the truth. When he kept refusing, I heard a loud slap and ran inside.”

He also revealed that young Aamir had then cried and admitted the controversy, which was later dealt with by the ICC.

PCB’s incompetence escalates match-fixing situation

Razzaq revealed that if the Pakistan Cricket Board and team management had acted in a better manner, the scandal would not have escalated to such an extent.

“Some senior players advised the team manager to fine the three players and send them home on disciplinary grounds before the ICC intervenes,” he said. Butt and Asif never played for Pakistan; However, Mohammad Amir made a comeback to international cricket in 2016, before retiring in 2024.
