Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been in the news for several months. The 15-year-old showcased his talent in the Under-19 World Cup and was named Player of the Tournament and scored 175 runs in the final against England. After that, he had a great performance with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.

Teenage sensation Rich Cash finished as the leading run-getter in the league, scoring 776 runs with one hundred and 5 half-centuries and thus won the Orange Cap and also became the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament. After his stellar season, Vaibhav Suryavanshi was called up to the India A team, and was later called up to the senior team for the first time.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi created history

After a long wait, Vaibhav Suryavanshi finally got his chance in the second T20 match between India and England. He made his debut and broke Sachin Tendulkar’s long standing record of being the youngest cricketer to debut for the India national cricket team. Tendulkar made his debut at the age of 16 and Suryavanshi made his debut at the age of 15 years and 99 days.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi scored 14 runs in 10 balls in his first match and looked in good form. Many former cricketers and experts were very happy after his debut as they saw him perform live in IPL. Now, former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has shared his views on the Boy Wonder and the challenges facing Suryavanshi in the coming years.

“It (T20) is very easy” – AB de Villiers feels T20 cricket is easier than Test cricket

Speaking on TOI Sports’ Bombay Sports Exchange podcast, de Villiers said that the widespread appeal of T20 cricket has influenced young players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi while deciding their careers, as it has become easier to play the shorter format of the game rather than playing Test cricket.

“He (Suryavanshi) could become one of the first youngsters who just says, ‘Sorry, I’m not interested in Test cricket. I’m perfectly happy playing T20 cricket.’

“From a comfort point of view, it (T20) is very easy. You are facing short spells, there are only two fielders outside the circle during the powerplay, the wickets are flat – it can be a very easy life as a cricketer. We will see what he decides. But no matter what he (Suryavanshi) chooses, there will definitely be challenges and pitfalls along the way.”

“He will go through tough times” – AB de Villiers warns Vaibhav Suryavanshi

AB de Villiers also pointed out the fact that if Vaibhav Suryavanshi refuses to play Test cricket and only plays the shorter format of the game, then it should be respected and he should not be blamed for taking the decision.

“You can’t blame him. These decisions are taken at the top level. It’s up to the administrators to strike the right balance and make those decisions a little more difficult than they currently are. Right now, the choice is quite clear (between Tests and T20s),” de Villiers said on TOI Sports’ Bombay Sports Exchange podcast.

De Villiers said that Suryavanshi’s journey will not be easy. He said, “He will go through difficult phases. His character will be tested. Then it will depend on him whether he has the character and mental strength to go through those phases or not. There are a lot of red flags and pitfalls that he may have to face.”

“At 15, you’ve still got to be relatively immature – and he probably is. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I hope he has good leadership, guidance and advice. I also hope he’s willing to accept help along the way because it’s going to be a tough road. There’s absolutely no doubt about that. Especially if he chooses to play Test cricket – which he may not.”
