Former South African great AB de Villiers has warned that Indian superstar Abhishek Sharma will be under a lot of pressure in the crucial match against West Indies in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. He further stressed that he will be burdened by the expectations of his team and millions of Indian fans.
India enter the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 with one of the most explosive batting units in the world. At one point, campaigns claimed that India could score a total of 300 in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. However, India have struggled with the bat at times in this competition.
Dynamic star Abhishek Sharma, who managed to score only 70 runs in five innings, did not look in good form. The batsman finally regained some confidence after playing a brilliant innings against Zimbabwe, where he scored his first ICC half-century.
AB de Villiers said, “It is a pressure game and for a player who is not in form, it is difficult to play a pressure game.”
Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers believes that there will be a lot of pressure on Abhishek Sharma in the important match between India and West Indies. There will be a lot of pressure on the dynamic left-handed opening batsman as it is a do-or-die match for him.
Regarding Abhishek Sharma’s poor form in the tournament, AB de Villiers said, “He is out of form but very dangerous. They will need him against the West Indies. It is a pressure game and it is difficult for a player who is out of form to play a pressure game.”
“For example, look at Jos Buttler against New Zealand. You can see he is feeling a bit of pressure. He is one of the best T20 players ever and if he can feel the pressure, then Abhishek will definitely feel the pressure against West Indies along with the entire country,” he said.
“It can take a toll on a player sometimes” – AB de Villiers
Despite his recent struggles, Abhishek Sharma remains one of the best batsmen in the Indian lineup. And thanks to his stellar 2025 season, he is still the No. 1 ranked ICC T20I batsman despite starting the ICC T20 World Cup with three zeroes.
Furthermore, AB de Villiers also revealed that the Indian team, as well as the fans of the Men in Blue, will burden Abhishek with expectations to see him perform.
“Knowing the standards he has set over the last few months, they will want him to perform. That can be very taxing on a player sometimes,” he said.
“Focus on what you are good at…” – AB de Villiers on the explosive Indian batsman
After this AB de Villiers gave invaluable advice to the Indian star. He asked him to take things slow and take his time at the crease. Despite his poor performance in the tournament, he remains one of the imminent threats to the opposition.
De Villiers said, “My advice to him is to just focus on what you are good at. That is to look at the cricket ball, take a few deep breaths and make sure you slow things down. When you feel the bowlers are troubling you, send them back. Pretend like you are defending yourself again.”
He then continued to say that they should be aware of the dimensions of the field and then focus primarily on putting the ball on the floor while working on the fundamentals. He further advised him not to play big innings in the beginning and start with 5 runs in 5 balls.
