The great South Africa National Cricket Team batsman AB de Villiers has estimated India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad star batter Shreyas Iyer for some major reasons behind the snub.
One of the estimates taken by AB de Villiers was that Shreyas Iyer’s presence would mean ‘many leaders’ in the Indian dressing room and conflict between them, Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill.
Who knows what is going on behind the closed doors – AB de Villiers
The Control Board for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Aggarkar is receiving the India Squad for the Asia Cup 2025 at the end of a heavy backlash since the announcement of the India Squad.

He has faced criticism to select Shreyas Iyer in the squad despite the consistent and extraordinary performance of the batsman in 2025.
Iyer saw in the home ODI series against the England National Cricket Team at the Staller Touch and the ICC Champions Trophy ended as India’s leading run-gate in 2025.
After that, he led the Punjab Kings (PBK) from the front in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and took the team to the final by playing an explosive knock, which he eventually lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
The absence of Shreyas Iyer from the Asia Cup 2025 squad shook many people, and now mythological batsman AB de Villiers has surprised the decision of the selectors. Speaking on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers said:
“Who knows what is going on behind the closed doors. Perhaps the credit does not even know. There may be some things that have happened in the last few years that determine why it does not taste the month of this tournament. I am not sure what is the reason for this because it will not be in my team much.”
They have very mature and showed a lot of leadership qualities – AB de Villiers
Proteius praised Iyer by the Great, saying that he had matured and emerged as a brilliant leader. He said:
“I just study through that squad and I was wondering where Shreyas Iyer can fit. I have seen that fans have been harassed about their exclusion and credit will be the most upset because he has played some very good cricket in the last few years. He has matured a lot and has shown a lot of leadership qualities.”
Estimating a reason behind Iyer’s snub from India team for the continental tournament, de Villiers said:
“When I was captaincy, I was thinking, if there is a 50-50 calls between two players, I will always bend to the man who provides more than a team’s perspective from the field. When it is 50-50 on the ground, you have to start looking at other areas like he adds value to the team’s room, does he take some players around him up?”

Perhaps this will be too much of a clash with him – AB de Villiers
Another reason is that de Villiers felt that Iyer had a possible dressing room war between him, due to the presence of a lot of leaders between Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill.
He said, “Maybe something has to be done with it. I am just guessing a complete guess because it is strange that a quality player like him did not create an early team for Team India, especially with leadership qualities, he is bringing,” he said.
“Maybe it will have a lot of struggle with him and perhaps there are a lot of leaders and a lot of captains. Perhaps the truth will be revealed one day and we will know why Shreyas is struggling to go to Team India.”
