AB de Villiers blames “external influences”, claims India are “extraordinarily nervous” to face West Indies

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers said that India is under immense pressure ahead of the Super 8 match against West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026. De Villiers pointed out that India had entered the prestigious tournament as favourites, but would have to win at all costs on home soil against an unpredictable team.

The final match of Super 8 will be held on Sunday, March 1 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. The Caribbean team has already won both its matches in the ongoing tournament against Scotland and Italy in Kolkata. It is noteworthy that they also won the final of T20 World Cup 2016 at the same venue in Kolkata.

It is a very pressure game for India – AB de Villiers

Speaking on his YouTube channel, AB de Villiers said that the West Indies have very good memories from Eden Gardens. The former Proteas captain said that India is a strong team on paper, but external factors and the home crowd could make the match stressful for them.

“Everyone was rooting for India to win the tournament. So it’s a very pressured game for them, considering they face the unpredictable West Indies. And the West Indies have very good memories of Eden Gardens from 2016,” de Villiers said.

“So it doesn’t look good for India, and they will be exceptionally nervous. West Indies are no better than India, but there are a lot of external influences there. India, suddenly, finds itself in a position to win on home soil in front of its home crowd,” he said.

I believe India has the ability to overcome pressure- AB de Villiers

The former South African captain said that the crowd can sometimes increase the pressure on the field. However, de Villiers said India have the quality to handle it. He believes that if India wins this match then it will regain its momentum and win the tournament.

The former cricketer said, “The crowd can sometimes work against you, and that’s where the pressure becomes so great that you almost freeze there. You freeze as a player because you can feel the pressure from outside. You almost suffocate.”

“But I believe India have the ability to recover from this and then they will become a dangerous team again to win it. If India win this game, they will win the tournament. No one can stop them.”

If India wins, they will win the tournament – AB de Villiers

AB de Villiers said that the match against West Indies will test India’s character more than its skills. He said that India is the most talented T20 team and a win can take them on the way to winning the tournament.

“If they overcome that kind of pressure in the Super Eights, against all the odds, as no one expected them to be in such a situation, they will go on and win the tournament. You look at the talent India has and that is where the team’s ability and character will be tested. They are the most talented team in the world, but their character as a T20 team has never been tested before,” de Villiers said (via the above source).

“This is the moment when people will look at India’s T20 team and say, ‘You know what, they have character too.’ Sanju Samson, coming back in the last game, told me that there are some question marks regarding his batting lineup and batting order.”
